NO LOWBALLERS, Serious inquiries only!! Don't waste my time!!

The joys of reading Kijiji car ads.

People will put in comments like "no lowballers", "serious buyers only", " don't waste my time", "no test pilots", and expect potential buyers to contact them. Worse, more often than not they're asking ridiculous prices for damaged/and or high mileage old cars, and sometimes they'll say things like "no lowballs" and not give a price. "Do you feel lucky? Do you punk!"

I see these ads sit for weeks, months, no surprise. Do people really think this is a good way to sell your car? Also, next to no one says their cars are satisfied or etested. You'd think that would greatly aid in making a sale.

Have you ever post to sell a car on kijiji before?
If you haven't, you may not understand the frustrations.

I often see these ads.

It's obvious they place higher value on things like their car, their time and their egos.

It shows an inability or laziness on their part to sell their car and to take the effort to weed out the time wasters via a simple phone call.

They are looking at niche buyers or gullible/desperate buyers who have no idea of the market.

I have. It is. Posting crap to offend and/or piss off a potential buyer isn't going to make things better. I don't like "test pilots" either, that's why I finally gave up and sold my car to a dealer. This is what these people should do.

I understand your frustrations.

Most don't have the tolerance or savvy for selling a car, dealing with strangers etc but certain things come with the territory.

What makes it different from selling a car on autotrader or even the classifieds?

Does Kijiji reflect a certain character about both the buyer and seller that autotrader fro example does not?

Are autotrader posters more car savvy and post all info necessary that they don't need to post disclaimers to the buyers.

Are the buyers also more car savvy that they know exactly what they want and won't waste the sellers time?

With any mode of selling, you'll always get sellers not giving enough info, buyers not being the most informed, and general clowns, dealers etc trying to lowball, tirekickers etc.

I think selling a car takes a certain amount of tolerance and patience, give and take etc, which is why most leave it to those who specialize in it.

Maybe I'm lucky, I sold my 2 cars online and 1 through a referral (easier).

First car, there are a lot of lowballers via email. Asking to pay you $3500 cash when I post for 8000. they didn't even ask to come see the car first, you know that they are not serious. Then first person came see the car and agree to buy it after.

Second car, few interested from internet and ask questions. No internet lowballers, a lot interested to come see the car. Few came and made an offer. I sold it to the highest. Not all of them test drove the car.
Dealership was only giving me $1000 to trade in, I sold it private as 7500 as it is.

The hassle did worth me $6500 of difference, but I understand some are not comfortable meeting up strangers and hand over the keys to others...

But to refer back to OP's post, a lot of people fooling around behind their keyboard or too much time on their hand.
When I listed my car to sell a while ago, I had to meet 5 potential buyers within few days. That's a lot of time spending to show the car around after work or during wk-end even I told them to come near my place. You surely don't wabnt someone just to come have a "look" of the car and try to lowball you for over half of what you were asking.

I didn't post to Auto trader on my 2nd car. I did on my first.

When I posted on auto trader, all I got was the business that called and try to promote their carproof services, ask me to list my ads in their newspaper or other platform.
That's why I didn't bother to post there at the second time, but I went there to take a look to see what's a fair value of my car compare to other with the same model and year.

I would say that more people buy cars on Kijiji than any where else so obviously not everyone is having a bad experience.

Auto Trader is a joke and prices are way above what anybody should be paying.

You will have to deal with a bit of annoying people and no shows/ tire kickers buy if you don't want to deal with that you can always get less than 50% of actual value by trading it in.

Dealers know most people don't want to deal with selling a car themselves hence why they make so much money on used cars

My favourite line from buyers when you're trying to sell your car on Kijiji is "$X,XXX CASH" like it is some sort of incentive for me to take their offer... I'm not a bank what do you expect, me to finance you the car? Of course you have to pay me cash.

I hate selling cars privately but in the end it is always worth it. Few hours of work results in thousands of extra dollars, pretty good ROI.

I would never buy a vehicle with test driving it and if I didn't like the car in person, I'd walk away. Like after finding Rust.

Best was I went to test drive a Jetta. Guy told me it was driven by his daughter. It had no plates so I couldn't drive it too far, certainly not on highway. Then the brakes were out. He told me he'd put new ones.

How do these people expect someone to buy a car without a test drive, I am not sure.

Same exact thing at a dealer. He basically said everything will be fixed when I buy. He asked me to not drive too fast since the brakes were worn out. Like WTF, he didn't want me to try out a 200hp car?

I see nothing wrong with any of those statements except when they don't post a price. Unless you are looking for a trade then post the price.

Selling a car brings a lot of time wasters so you need to weed out those ones.

So when someone says "no lowballers" that reads to me like "I don't want to negotiate". What would the guy consider a lowball? I see the person as hostile right from the get go, and I'm not interested in dealing with someone with entitlement issues. I'm going to offer what the car is worth to me, if you don't like the offer, say "no" or make a counter offer.
