Now is a good time to sell your nice car and buy a beater

I just had my car appraised by a dealer and was offered surprisingly more for it than I thought it was worth. Only slightly less than I paid for it 3 years ago. As you know there is a computer chip shortage due to covid which is forcing car manufacturers to reduce production, which is affecting new and used car prices. Anything nice (newer than 5 years, or even 10 years if it's higher end) is up in price, according to this article up by 40% this year:

https://www.businessinsider.com/why-are ... als-2021-7

That article is from the US, but as you know trends tend to start in the US and reach Canada a bit later. So if you bought a new or newish car a year or 2 ago, you can sell it now for very close to what you paid, or in some cases even a slight profit. Driving a car for a year for free is a once in a life time opportunity. I have already started shopping for a beater and will soon trade in my car. I'd rather have the money in the bank than an expensive car, especially now that I work from home and don't require a reliable car.

Used car prices have skyrocketed during the pandemic and there are a few reasons why, from CTV Consumer Alert

Um...if the used ICE vehicles aren't depreciating as quick, then the total ownership cost is lower.

Even beaters are fetching good money these days. Not sure there's an advantage to unloading a decent vehicle right now unless you're willing to take the bus for the next 6-8 months.

Did this in May

Went from a 2016 Audi A7 TDI to a 2010 VW Golf Highline with manual transmission

Apart from taxes I got $2000 less than what I paid for it 2 years ago.

No regrets as even apart from what’s happening in the used car market I wanted back stick shift and something smaller. Used to have a 2016 GTI before the Audi and always enjoyed it.

Thanks for providing an actual example. Driving an A7 for 2 years for only $2000 is an amazing deal. If you leased the same car for 2 years it would have cost you many times more. Was it a private sale or did you just trade it in at the dealer?

I'm guessing you already only drive beaters then.

He is likely compensated through work (monthly allowance/mileage expense) or writes it off as a business expense. I was/am getting 54c/km and was barely breaking even (2015 RAV4 LTD) while paying off the car, insurance and gas. Once the car was paid off, was making a little bit of money.

Ok so his scenario isn't relevant to the vast majority of people, not sure why he even piped up then.

Private Sale and the car had the CPO warranty which was expiring this year as well.

Actually if I traded it into a dealership and bought another car at a higher value I would have done even better when factoring the trade-in tax savings. (Dealer offered just $2k less than my private sale)

I was cross shopping Golfs ranging from a 2010 @ ~$5k to ~$35K 2018 Golf R.

In then end I found myself preferring to put the money saved into the stock market and watching it grow.

Hopefully I can get anywhere from 2-4years (50-80K KM's) out of this car without major maintenance. Even if I scrap it after I'm still far ahead of what I used to pay in maintenance/depreciation with my previous cars. Plus with a older car I like working on it on my own whereas a car under warranty I would just take it to the dealership for everything.

This is probably just a temporary thing, things are opening up and plants are catching up their orders. Workers needs to work to feed family and pay bills, the shortage thing will easy down eventually.

As a buyer, there is no way I'm paying a used car more money than if it was new. Are you crazy? Yes, there is a shortage now, but this is not going to be forever. Buy your new car 3 months later, or next year. If I'm in the market of a new car, I will not sacrifice on a used car even it is the same dollar, let alone paying more on a used. Disappointed But Relieved Face

As as seller stand point, unless I really need money. There is no way I will sell a nice car that I have and go drive a beater. We work hard to afford better things and live comfortable and not selling everything that worth money and live like an extreme poor person. Money is nothing if you don't spend it. unless you have different priority, then it is different stories.

People who bought houses 10-20 years ago make few times more money since their houses raise in value. They are not going to sell their million dollar home and live on streets, right?

This thread prompted my to check AutoTrader for comparables. Sure enough, I saw comparable used vehicles listed near the price I paid new, 3 model years / 70,000km ago.

However, I still need the vehicle to be available, and reliable.

Browsing new inventory for possible new replacements, and there is simply nothing comparable. All new vehicles are priced much higher, and generally speaking, are higher trim levels. My vehicle is a 4x4 pickup, base trim level.

So, I don't see any way to take advantage of the fact that my truck has basically not depreciated. Similar to when my house shot up in value, I still needed a house to live in, so....

I do see however, how unloading a high value vehicle can put a lot of cash in your pocket, if you don't need a high value vehicle.

yes, I agree if someone is already planning about selling a used car now, there is no better time to sell now.

Chip shortage is still a big impact. Ford has to shut down production across multiple factory lines until end of August.

I already see the volume for autos being shipped through CN railway coming down sharply, to pandemic levels, once again.

Korea, China, Japan may be getting hit by hard by Covid, once again. And in Canada, the fires in BC are also restricting shipments of vehicles from those countries and have to sit in Vancouver port or on railcars wherever they can cram them as fires have burned through the tracks and an investigation is underway to see if CN may have caused it.

Definitely holding my beaters closely. And have been through the whole pandemic. I basically drive around in money printers/crypto miners. Jeep, two Civics, Sienna, and a Fit. Getting rid of a Civic and adding a 2008-ish Lexus IS250 AWD to the fleet as someone I know wants to unload it quick before they move, so giving me a good deal.

It is temporary. It's just a question of how long temporary lasts.

re: buy later or next year. Look at the Eastcourt F-150 thread. Look at the vast majority of dealer lots. New vehicles aren't exactly easy to come by either. I just hope that "temporary" is over by the time I'm vehicle shopping again.

Agreed. Replacement cost is too high right now to upgrade or downgrade. If you need a car, just keep what you have unless it is going to fall apart tomorrow.

It would work if no tax is involved, but the tax you paid for your current car and will pay for the car you are going to buy would wipe out any increase in resale value. You just lose less compare to before.

I am actually considering this. I have a higher end car (probably 25K+) and will be working from home probably going forward .. but I will loose whatever tax benefit I have in the car if I sell without buying ??

I checked with some outfits that offer to buy your car for cash.. and they offered very close to that.
