Old Moto G 3rd Gen stuck in boot loop – options?

I got an XT1540 five years ago, and it's been getting increasingly problematic as of late until now, when I can't actually get it to boot anymore. Sometimes it gets stuck on the "Powered by android" screen, and sometimes the Peter Crawley boot animation plays and loops forever. I've tried leaving it on the boot screen for many hours now and while it definitely gets warm (and drains the battery if I leave it unplugged), nothing happens.

I can still get to the boot menu, look at the recovery logs, wipe the cache partition, and so on. I have not yet tried to do a factory reset because I would kind of like to get it to boot one more time to make sure my data is backed up – but I'm not sure I can get that far.

I've already made some inquiries elsewhere and it looks like my best option is to install TWRP after unlocking the bootloader, but this seems like quite the time-consuming rabbit hole that will lead to an Education and excessive profanity.

So I thought I'd ask: has anyone here encountered similar difficulties? Are there solutions I have not yet considered? (I wouldn't feel so bad about paying $20 for a professional to take care of everything for me, but I doubt such things come cheaply.)

I have 1 option for you:

All kidding aside, I had that phone myself and got stuck in the bootloop (thought it was the power button) -- took it apart, no fix

I just decided to chuck it and get my father in-law a new phone.

Well, at least I'm not the only one. Did you try a Factory Reset before you took it apart?

Tried everything wiping the full phone (via ADB, TWRP) to various custom ROMs, before taking it apart.
Back then Cyanogenmod was still alive IIRC.
Nothing worked, then I chucked.

Yes, I'm already using a Galaxy S7 most of the time now. But it was still a fine device for watching videos and web browsing; I would hate to give up on it entirely. (I still have my Playbook stashed in a corner, dangit.)

I've been told the hardware in these things is pretty durable compared to later models.

Even if you couldn't get the phone to boot again, were you at least able to use TWRP to recover any data?

Fair enough. I don't suppose you can at least recall if you followed a specific guide?

off topic.

I found Moto G4 plus and could reset factory. It is 8.1 os now. But want to put new os.
Dont know how to use ADB, TWRP) to various custom ROMs. Is there simple way or steps to do thisÉ

I have one that I originally bought for someone else, and then inherited it back a year ago. I still use it for some things - it has great 3-day battery life, but it sometimes freezes or crashes apps due to lack of memory.

Is there a microSD card in it? If so, did you try removing it?

aside from ideally being able to recover data for OP's purposes........

you can also keep the phone & hopefully use it for trade-in (i.e $50 value) during a trade-in promo when getting a new phone (WoW and The Mobile Shop used to have those trade-ins)......

if worried about your data - just find out where the memory chip is & pop it off........often these trade-in promos they don't care if the phone turns on..........

That's what I did with a destroyed BB Z30 - screen was smashed & didn't turn on. Got $50 trade-in value towards a Iphone XR.

All the rep cared about was the IMEI# to enter into the system

That was one of the first things I tried. It made no difference, but then, I really wasn't expecting it to – usually after turning the phone on it took a minute or so for it to recognize the SD card and for all the applications installed on the SD card to appear.

On that note: what exactly can I do with the SD card now? I suppose I really shouldn't have expected that I could just plug it into my Windows machine and find all the files on it. Since I was installing apps to it, I guess it was formatted as internal storage? Does that mean it's encrypted beyond hope of recovery? Is there a recommended program for dealing with this? I found https://nelenkov.blogspot.com/2015/06/d ... orage.html , but is there a more elegant solution?
