This article does not support your conclusion. It says:
"...because no studies have been done on the effectiveness of cloth masks in preventing transmission of coronavirus to others, it is impossible to assess their benefits, if any."

That means they dont know and cant say either way. It does not say they are not effective.

There are other studies that say they help.

Until n95 or 99 become common usage, if confirmed as beneficial, is a reasonable option if used properly. Beside you can easily make a cloth mask N95 by adding a filter.

Surgical masks (level 2 or 3) is the standard of care as it slows the spread in case the wearer has it without knowing. These cloth masks just make you look better.
As far as prioritizing surgical masks for healthcare workers, we are far past the point of not having adequate supply. Canadian Tire has pallets full of surgical masks for $1.2/mask.
Wearing a cloth mask protects others from you. When you cough, sneeze, etc. the mask make a large difference in how much and how far your saliva and other fluids are able to travel.

I have this co worker who spits a lot while talking. After mask was made mandatory, he complained about the uneasy feeling he had wearing it. Company gave him a shield to wear. The plastic face shield look nasty within a few hours. Imagine if this guy never wore a mask or this plastic shield. He would be spitting all over the computers and files.

N95 mask are pretty impractical for everyday use. They filter so well that air itself has trouble going through...at least it feels that way for anyone who's tried to use one for a long period of time.

I agree, surgical is the way to go. It's filteration will block out bacteria (sadly not a virus) but it can withstand pressures of around 150 mmHg for Level 2 alone. Hence why theyre used in surgery.

Cloth masks however will absorb water which isnt exactly what you'd want when droplet precautions is what's needed.

If you go with a cloth mask, bare minimal, use it with a filter.

Whenever someone asks a question that starts with "Why do they..." or "Why don't they...", the answer is always a) money, b) stupidity, or c) both.

This thread is derailed so moving it, plus this rule is applicable as well: n95 masks and select other COVID-19 related items are prohibited from being posted in Hot Deals and the Buy Sell Trade forums until further notice.
