Ontario man fined $110 for faded, peeling licence plate (CTV Consumer Alert)
If your licence plates have faded, you could get a fine if you don't replace them, but who is responsible for paying for replacements?

There's a 5 year warranty on license plates where they will be replaced for free after that you have to pay. I had one of the bad batch of B plates which I believe they are still replacing for free. I got mine free after 8 years.

Toronto man John Petrosoniak has two sets of Ontario licence plates that are peeling, faded and cracked. He said he went to Service Ontario to have them replaced, but he was told he would have to pay for replacements and refused.
Service Ontario told CTV News Toronto that delaminated licence plates will only be replaced for free if they were purchased within five years.
The fee for new plates older than five years is $59, but Petrosoniack said he believes if the plates have a defect they should be replaced for free.

From what I've noticed is the defects start to show well before 5 years, people just don't bother until the plates get really bad. That one set of plates the guy from the video owns is at least 22 years old (ACxx xxx). My set of ANxx xxx plates are from 2002.desolatioN wrote: ↑ Garbage. You pay yearly for stickers and licensing fees, yet they refuse to cover the mandatory license plates they themselves issue which are clearly defective.
I can't stand why people aren't more upset about stuff like this

We should be happy someone is putting in their time to fight it and getting coverage in the news. Its like people who pay full price at Domino's subsidizing the people who only eat there with coupons.booblehead wrote: ↑ pay a little or pay a lot ... someone gets this man a calculator.
Now, he is going to waste even more time to fight the ticket and whether he wins or loses, he may get stopped again and again down the road and the whole fighting process will never end.

He is fighting for the little guy. And what if he wins? What would happen if the court sides with him, and they make it easier to replace plates for free? Better for all of us.booblehead wrote: ↑ pay a little or pay a lot ... someone gets this man a calculator.

Anything that obscures your plate isn't allowed. A dirty plate can still be read but one with a dirty cover can't be. At night even a clean clear cover can cause a glare where the plate can't be read. I do find it ridiculous that some MTO locations sell these covers.

My personalized plates are from 2004 and other than some weather wear they look fine.

MTO does not endorse or promote the sale, purchase, or use of clear or tinted licence-plate covers.

I didn't see them myself, someone else posted in another thread that he saw them beside a display for personalized plates.Dhanushan wrote: ↑ MTO does not endorse or promote the sale, purchase, or use of clear or tinted licence-plate covers.
