Ontario man fined $110 for faded, peeling licence plate (CTV Consumer Alert)

If your licence plates have faded, you could get a fine if you don't replace them, but who is responsible for paying for replacements?

There's a 5 year warranty on license plates where they will be replaced for free after that you have to pay. I had one of the bad batch of B plates which I believe they are still replacing for free. I got mine free after 8 years.

I am just like the guy in the news, peeling plate, and Service Ontario said "no free replacement".

I posted this before in the forum.

BTW, I did ask nicely, still they told me I had to pay.

Toronto man John Petrosoniak has two sets of Ontario licence plates that are peeling, faded and cracked. He said he went to Service Ontario to have them replaced, but he was told he would have to pay for replacements and refused.

from https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/ontario-man- ... -1.5828499
Service Ontario told CTV News Toronto that delaminated licence plates will only be replaced for free if they were purchased within five years.

The fee for new plates older than five years is $59, but Petrosoniack said he believes if the plates have a defect they should be replaced for free.

Garbage. You pay yearly for stickers and licensing fees, yet they refuse to cover the mandatory license plates they themselves issue which are clearly defective.

I can't stand why people aren't more upset about stuff like this

From what I've noticed is the defects start to show well before 5 years, people just don't bother until the plates get really bad. That one set of plates the guy from the video owns is at least 22 years old (ACxx xxx). My set of ANxx xxx plates are from 2002.

pay a little or pay a lot ... someone gets this man a calculator.

Now, he is going to waste even more time to fight the ticket and whether he wins or loses, he may get stopped again and again down the road and the whole fighting process will never end.

We should be happy someone is putting in their time to fight it and getting coverage in the news. Its like people who pay full price at Domino's subsidizing the people who only eat there with coupons.

He is fighting for the little guy. And what if he wins? What would happen if the court sides with him, and they make it easier to replace plates for free? Better for all of us.

The government should replace the plates without these issues going to court, it is in the public interest to have clear, legible plates on every car....

If I were in his shoes, I sure don't want to chance it by having my insurance being affected by this traffic offence (if he loses) which he has total controlled of in the first place. That's my 2 cents.

Sucks to suck. No empathy for this moron. It’s often just sheer laziness that results in this. I’ve noticed some people also like having busted up plates because they seem to get off from 407 bills/red light camera tickets, etc. Only a matter of time before a bored cop decides to get you though.

I’ve never heard of someone actually ending up paying to replace defective plates. A buddy got refused by some Karen at the local Service Ontario, so he just showed up to another location and tried asking for a new plate nicely. Replaced free of charge in 10 mins.

Anything that obscures your plate isn't allowed. A dirty plate can still be read but one with a dirty cover can't be. At night even a clean clear cover can cause a glare where the plate can't be read. I do find it ridiculous that some MTO locations sell these covers.

My personalized plates are from 2004 and other than some weather wear they look fine.

MTO does not endorse or promote the sale, purchase, or use of clear or tinted licence-plate covers.

You may have seen these for sale at privately owned ServiceOntario locations

I didn't see them myself, someone else posted in another thread that he saw them beside a display for personalized plates.

Exactly.
There was the 5 Year free plate replacement period.
Some peeps just decided not to do it.

And it was reported on the Video, Replacement plates are $59.
Yeah I get it the Guy complaining says it's the Principle of the Whole situation, Defective Plate Manufacturing.

But, I'd would have exchanged the Plates for Free or pay the $59 for New Plates. Rather than get a ticket for $110.
That's me.

When i go to work I see vehicles with peeling plates. I guess until they get stopped by Police they'll just continue to drive with them. *shrugs*
😎
