Ontario sticker renewal arrears

I'm sure this has been asked before but I couldn't find it.

With Ontario opening back up, it's only a matter of time before the MTO stops extending the validity of expired stickers.

It says on the Service Ontario website that they will make you pay arrears. This will be a significant amount of money.

Can I just request new plates instead? Throw the old ones in the garbage and purchase new ones for 59$, then have quick call to update my insurance company. Or is there a catch/other fees that I am missing?

It's time to pay the piper. Wouldn't be fair to those like myself that have paid throughout all of this.

Aren’t the plates tied to your drivers license?

I can’t see how you would escape paying for what you "used".

I just renewed 3 cars last week for $720 total which covers 2 years until late 2022 since they had expired last year. Not thrilled but no choice AFAIK.

The plate is tied to the owner/owner's license. Even if you order a new set of plates as long as its going to be registered to your license, the owner, you will be charged arrears stickers. I just renew my stickers each time online which is fast and easy. Not sure why people think they could've gotten away with not renewing it for 2 years and not have to pay it eventually...

Provincial stay-at-home orders prevented me from using the roads for much of the year anyway, so paying the full fee (also provincial) makes no sense.

It was possible to do it in the past. Say you had an old convertible that wasn't used for a 5 years and sat in the garage. You could just turn in the old plates and request new ones, instead of paying the crazy backpay.

I was just searching for it and found mentions like in this article (see first Q&A)
https://www.wheels.ca/news/be-sure-to-i ... ur-plates/

It's just that none of them are recent, none since COVID, so I don't know if you can do it anymore.

Try it and let us know. Doesn't sound like anyone has tried around here. I doubt it will work but who knows.

So, how much is this arrears that you are scared of paying?

The fairness question will always be raised no matter what. Is it fair the ev vehicles are not paying their shares in using the roads that are largely funded by the gasoline taxes ? Was it fair that they also got a huge rebate for their ev buys from all taxpayers in past years ?

I guess you can always give it a try yourself by going to mto and request a new plate instead and let us know how this turns out. If you are successful, then kudos to your wallet.

Just renew your stickers online, and get them mailed. You don't have to wait for the province to end the moratorium on expired stickers. I got new ones last year and I will do the same this year when the time comes.

They started extending in March 2020 I think, so it would be a full year +or- X months depending on birthday/when they require renewal again. For 120$ minimum (for me), I will gladly undo a couple of screws and switch plates lol.

Given the fact that the number of people who didn't renew their stickers (even though the option was always available online) will probably range in the hundreds of thousands or possibly even millions, I highly doubt the government will simply let this slide and fall for your trick. This isn't some odd one-off situation. This will amount to millions of dollars and I can guarantee they will go after people to get every cent back even if they have to hire temp workers like they did for CERB.

Using stay-at-home orders as an excuse will get you nowhere. That was for 2 months, not the majority of the year, and most went out and about as they pleased. I was still working and there were traffic jams every day! Even if you never left your home or drove your car the past year you should have contacted MTO to have your plates detached and also dropped insurance down to fire and theft. You didn't. Time to pay up.

They should not have let it go this long. All that has done is make people feel entitled to not want to pay. I put 10,100 km on my car in the last year since I bought it, if you drive a more ‘normal’ 20,000 km do you want to pay double what I do? Just pay it and stop trying to game the system.

Op’s beef was he did not get his money’s worth (if he had to pay the full amount) as he did not drive his vehicle on a daily basis.

Love how people try and weasel out of such petty things in life. Come on. Use your energy on making money instead.

Oh great here's another deadbeat

Why is this still not locked? Op is clearly trying to commit fraud.

Please don't give us your bs how you were not able to drive 🤣

Please proceed and let us know how it goes. If it works it’ll help a ton of people who didn’t renew, and if it doesn’t work then they’ll just make you pay what you owe anyways. Unless if they catch up to you and you’re also charged interest/penalties, but I’ve never heard of that as most likely they’ll just expect you to pay what you would have owed.

Its $120 a year for southern Ontario for the sticker. Which works out to be 33 cents a day. Can't remember if there are taxes on the $120, but if there is, it should work out to be a few cents more per day.

If you can't afford to pay 33 cents a day to drive. You shouldn't be driving at all. Most people spend more than that on coffee everyday. Gas cost more than that. Seriously stop trying to scam the system.
