Open Skies between Canada and the Dominican

Ottawa has reached an Open Skies agreement with the Dominican Republic, which will allow the expansion of flight options between the two countries, subject to market conditions of course. The most exciting potential development is the commencement of flights to Toronto and Montreal by Dominican carrier Arajet, which has been growing at a high pace. Arajet has wanted to serve YYZ and YUL for some time now, hopefully it happens soon.

I would hardly call this an "open skies" agreement. Let Arajet or any other DR-registered airline operate domestic routes within Canada, and then I'll get on board with the whole "open skies" thing.

I get what you're saying, but even an agreement as "limited" as this one is still a good thing for consumers. It's amazing how restrictive a lot of Canada's international air services agreements still are--even Canada's with India (which was recently expanded) is still limited to only a handful of Indian and Canadian cities.

Obviously Canada doesn't need an open skies agreement with every single country on the planet. But destinations that see a lot of traffic to and from Canada--like the Dominican Republic--definitely need one.

ARAjet probably heard how easy it is to ignore APPR and wanted the join in the fun.
