Out of country Emergency leave during Probation Period.

Hello there guys;
I am on a second month of Three month Probation on my new job but I have to make an out of country emergency leave for 3 weeks due to medical emergency my mother is having in India.

Should I wait until I buy tickets or should I get permission prior? What if they refuse? What usually happens in this scenario?

Is it better to just let this Job go as they might probably fail my probation as I would leave before completing my Probation period?

I think given the circumstances you should just be transparent with your boss about the situation and hope they are fine with it. No job is worth being tied down while a close family member needs your help, particularly if it's a terminal illness or the last time you may see them. If your manager says no it likely isn't a place you want to be long term anyway. In this market there be plenty of opportunities if you need to part ways.

IMO there's no right or wrong answer - everyone's going to have a different opinion based on their values and worldview.

What your decision really depends on what is what you value you most - keeping the job or visiting your mother. If you're willing to visit your mother regardless if they approve or the potential consequences then it doesn't really matter what order you do things but I would still notify your employer immediately for transparency and courtesy. However, if you want to hold onto your job and are willing to forego the trip then seek permission first.

IMO, I wouldn't want to work for a company that lacks compassion and flexibility for its employees by firing the employee or giving them a hard time in a situation like this. Life is more than a job/career.

Do I qualify for EI if they let me go and I do not pass the probation period?

Don't quote me on this, but if you have worked at least 6 months as a salaried employee in any organization, you are eligible.

I still think you should have an open discussion with your employer about your situation. Most employers will have empathy towards your situation and should agree, if not, I don't think it is a good place to work and is a sign of things you can expect in the future. Leave without pay should not be an issue since you are in probation, and you can ask them to extend your probation period once you come back.

Mom > job. Be upfront and be prepared to leave your job if they have a problem.

I agree with being transparent. Just straight up tell them. Understandably the employer might need work done. If you lose your job for it, then so be it. I'd pick mom over job any time.

Also, what kind of job is it? These days a lot of work can be done remotely. Time zone is a problem but I think there's room to work something out if your job can be done on a laptop. I feel like you can find a solution to manage both.

Just GO to your mom. The job, current one or new one, can wait, nothing you can do.

You will not get EI if you quit or are fired with cause.

Great advice here already. I will add one more point before you discuss and be transparent with your manager. Do you have any flexibility to do work during the 3 week leave? Understandably you cannot work all throughout. Be real about it with yourself before you speak to your manager. If you cannot that is okay as well, because Mum >>>> job any day. An additional point to consider as your manager may bring it up in your discussion so be prepared with what you can and cannot do realistically.

All the best and hope everything works out well with your mother!

Good advice, if I go back, I would rather devote 100% to family during 3 weeks.

Correct. I would rather forget my job. But, if Op”s have a financial issues then it will give him/her more stress.

Usually no pay leave they are ok. Paid leave, no. They will let you go. Boss might be more human than most and let you go back home.

Good advice. The only issue in Canada is while you out of a job expenses are high even with ei.... savings could deplete unless look for a job from India.
