I have this, it's built like a tank.
The only made in Canada jacket in their line and rarely goes on sale.

Buy and don't look back.

This is just a spring/fall jacket right? Not meant for colder weather?

I have one from at least ten years ago. Mine has an assymetrical zipper. I love it.

It's a weatherproof shell, no insulation.

It's an outer layer for extreme weather - the SV refers to this being the SeVere weather variant of the Alpha line.

That said, it's meant to be part of a layering system. You wouldn't wear only this at -50°.

I picked this up for $484 all in last year when Atmosphere was clearing out the Alpha series, and that $484 would have been $411 if I'd gone and picked up discounted gift cards beforehand - can't predict when stuff will go on clearance though!

It's an amazing jacket, and Arcteryx is known for their customer care and warranty. If this jacket ever fails, they'll fix it or send you a new one. You aren't just buying a jacket for this season, but a jacket for life.

Damn, people should stick to buying these for outdoor activities in harsh weather, not strolling around town in the fall and spring lol.

A good jacket for sure, but certainly overkill for casual fall wear in a city. This shell will certainly protect you from the harshest elements but it won’t keep you warm! I would recommend an Atom as a less expensive, more versatile and warmer piece.

Nice jacket, but I would only use it for skiing as an outer layer.

Definitely overkill for urban environment. It will feel like wearing a plastic bag and a drop of grease from french fries will totally annihilate the Gore-Tex membrane.

LOL, I wore my Beta AR year round as a light jacket, people always knew when I was near because of the noise.
Definitely not ideal for everyday use.

Only SM and XL. This is meant for super harsh environments and lots of abrasion. Not everyday wear - it won't be comfortable for that.

FYI for everyone: Also...40% off with Arcteryx is easily achievable if you're patient. 50% off or more is where it's tough.

I have a Theta AR. On humid days, it'll feel like a plastic bag for sure. On days where the air is dry, it feels OK. I still managed to easily wear it out skiing (abrasion) and punch a hole through it when I fell with a gopro in one of my pockets. I was eyeing the SV because of that...

The Alpha SV hardly ever goes 50%+ and if it does its usually some weird colour.
Pretty Much everything else they make is easy to get a couple times a year at least for 50%+ off

For those unfamiliar with Arc'teryx in general and the Alpha line in particular - these jackets are designed for very specific purposes. They are amazing for these purposes, but won't necessarily be the best choice for other casual wear. The Alpha SV is an alpinism jacket. It's extremely durable and weather proof. As others mentioned before, it is not insulated, so it is not suitable to wear by itself on a cold day. It is meant to keep wind and precipitation out while still being breathable (breathable for a waterproof jacket that is). Also, pay attention to the location of the pockets. Since it is designed for climbing, the pockets are meant to cause minimal shift in center of gravity when being used. You won't be able to walk around with your hands in your pockets, and they will be less comfortable than standard hand pockets (also located higher), so keep that in mind if you're eyeing it for daily use around town.
Overall, amazing jacket for those who need it, but even at 40% off, you have much better and cheaper options if what you're looking for is a rain jacket for the city.
