Painting a steel garage door. Any tips?

I’d like to paint my steel garage doors. It came white from the factory with a limited life warranty. I’d like it taupe or dark grey.

The doors are about 5 years old and the factory paint still looks like new. The manufacturer says it can be painted with high-quality latex exterior paint and not to use oil-based paint. I’d probably need something with good UV protection.

So in our climate can I paint it and still get years of maintenance free usage? Or am I going to deal with flaking or badly fading paint every 2-3 years.

I would think aluminum siding paint would be ideal. Just make sure to clean it well and probably scuff it with some fine sandpaper.

I'd suggest using Tremclad paint as it adheres well to metal surfaces.

I painted ours with Tremclad about 10 years ago. No flaking or peeling, it just got dirty that's now embedded so I'll be doing it again this year. Clean it first using TSP, I didn't even bother sanding.
