Passport Renewal Issues

Has anybody actually had a call back from Passport Canada in order to get their passports renewed?

My wife booked us flights to visit family friends in the USA in April, but my passport is going to expire while we're there so I need to get it renewed. Its my fault for not checking, but they don't make it easy to get a new one.

I've had a ticket for a call back for 5 days now. They promised a return call within 2 days, so that didn't happen, and their phone lines are down due to technical difficulties.

I guess my option is go in two days before and do a rush processing. Has anybody done this during COVID?

There is a backlog

"With international travel picking up since the beginning of the pandemic, many are trying to renew their passports. But as Shauna Hunt reports, the wait could cost families not only their trip, but thousands of dollars."

I booked an appt for a call back. they called from an unknown number on a weekend, so I thought it was a scam. They left a message with no call back, after the second call, they told me they were closing the ticket, and I had to resubmit another ticket. I just started answering everything for the next three days, and finally got an appointment. Mine passport office does require an appt to get in, they had a security guard checking appts and turning people away.
On a 'smart' device that isn't always so smart. So please forgive the autocorrects and typos. If it bothers you, then don't read my posts, but don't waste my time correcting me. If you can get past the typos, then my posts generally have some value.

I do. Really? Well I guess I have that fall back. I didn't know you could use an expired passport with a Nexus.

Okay cool, do you know how many days it took? I've no missed calls and turn off the Unknown caller filtering since I made the request.

Yes, you will lose the TSA pre-check benefit if you do not have a valid passport on file, but the NEXUS card will still still valid for entry.

What happens if my passport expires?
Your DHS Trusted Traveler Programs membership date is not dependent on the passport expiration date. Membership will remain valid, even if the passport expires.

If you receive TSA PreCheck® benefits through your Global Entry membership, you will not be eligible to use them until you have renewed your passport and updated your account.

Double check with your airline that they will let you board with only a NEXUS card and not a passport. Porter Airlines is notorious for refusing boarding to Canadians who present only NEXUS cards, even though a NEXUS card alone is 100% sufficient for border crossing purposes.

I did this in at the end of November. The first time, I put my request in on a Thursday and got a call on Saturday and Sunday morning (hence why I thought it was a scam). I resubmitted on late Sunday night/monday morning, then got the call on tuesday or thursday (can't remember). I hear now, they are a little more back logged, but taking appointments only for people who have trips already booked in the near future.

I wouldn't rely on Nexus, every US CBP and CBSA agent I've tried to use mine with since the onset of the pandemic has demanded my passport and has gotten very grumpy when I ask why I can't use the Nexus card and say things like "that's only for the machines"...very frustrating.

I had to renew my kids' passports last month. Got the call back in two business days (5 days over a weekend and including the day of call) and then struggled to get an appointment in a city I was going to be in when appts available, but generally a 2-3 week wait for an appointment as of a month ago.

I'm going through this now.. it's been 4 business days and I have not received a call. I spoke to a friend who didn't realise their passports had expired until 2 days before their trip so had to do a rush order... cost something like $340. For folks that have done the mail in, any hesitation with that method?

They haven't called me yet, it's been 10 days, so I don't think I'm going to get a call. I'm just going into the office 2 business days before and pay for the next day passport.

I would open a new ticket too. In January, there were not allowing walk ins even for for emergency passports. Might be different now with restrictions lifting.

Canada, Eh!!
Ideally have appointment to passport office but many do allow non appointments to wait in case space opens.
2022: BOC raised 8 times and MCAP raised its prime next day.
2017 to 2018: BOC raised rates 5 times and MCAP raised its prime next day each time.
2020: BOC dropped rates 3 times and MCAP waited to drop its prime to include all 3 drops.

I wonder if I should make another ticket. It's been a week since I have submitted the ticket.

FWIW, once, upon returning from an international trip, at Pearson, they was a passport check just upon exiting the aircraft. I presented my Nexus card, as I had that card ready for the kiosk, but they insisted in seeing my passport. So something to keep in mind if travelling with just Nexus. (This is regarding the earlier discussions of travelling with just Nexus)

Still waiting for my call. It's been 6 days.

I noticed they have a new system now for booking appointments but no appointments are available, even within a 100km radius of my home. Has anyone had any luck getting an appointment through this new system?

They called me back finally today. No appointments anywhere. They said I can try online using the new booking to see if something opens up but no appointments at any location nearby currently. They said you can just go to any location as long as you have proof of travel. Even if it says no walk ins they are taking them. Not sure if I trust the person but I guess i have nothing to lose since there is nothing available.
