paternity leave: when to tell your employer?

Only one parent serves the waiting period. For the vast majority of couples it's served by the mother when she starts maternity EI because most mothers start leave a week or two before the birth.

If you do serve the waiting period, some employers offering top-up also top up the waiting period. The federal public service is an example where that's the case. Check your employer's provisions.
