Petro Points Rewards...what's the best way to maximize?

Who still collects Petro Points? With gas prices rising, those offers that give you 1,000 bonus on 25L fill is becoming a joke compared to big discounts at Costco. I can't imagine going to Petro Canada without those bonus offers. Am I missing something here?

I enjoy rocking the 3¢ a litre instant rebate when I use my RBC credit card there. But yes, the promos have become considerably less interesting lately.

You make the 3 cents sound so good, but isn’t that just the same as Gas+ giving 3 cents CTM?

My comparison is with:
Mobil - 30 pc points/Litre regular (again same)
Mobil - 90 pc points/Litre with PC Mastercard
Costco -around 8-12 cents/Litre lower for most markets

Please explain for us

This

Plus Costco’s are few and far between … unless you live in a city

FYI not everyone on RFD lives in the GTA = Centre of the Universe
This is a NATIONAL CANADA WIDE WEBSITE
Although MILLIONS of Cdns do live in the GTA

(Where there are now 9+ Costco’s … and a Business Centre … or 2 )

So although there may be 6.5 Million living in just 7124 Sq Kms

There are another 31.5 Million Cdns
Living in the other 9.9 MILLION Sq Kms

Personally I buy most of my Gas at the big nationals like
PetroCanada & Shell … sometimes Cdn Tire … all give me Loyalty Points & often have promos
Costco when I get there

Not sure about most markets - maybe Ontario, but ......... around here Costco is only 4 cents less for Reg. and 6 cents for Premium.

Hardly worth the lineup and excessive idling during a busy time of day.

The way gas prices go up (and occasionally down) the difference between different stations is minor compared to those big gas price changes.
Timing your fill ups with a slice of luck much more important than individual station prices differences and nominal offers from credit cards/PetroCanada/retailers etc.

Could always prepay your gas costs with a credit card welcome bonus. 10%-11% back on $1000-$4000 with gift cards then stack with station offers @ petro, esso, shell etc. There are other options like the Triangle MasterCard, PC World Elite Mastercard, Stack Prepaid Mastercard + Offer, or right now Tangerine Mastercard signup bonus 10% back on $1000 spend + GCR rebate.

I indicated what attracts me to Petro-Canada. I’m not interested in explaining anything to you, so shop where the hell you want.

Maybe cuz they feel they already have you

Do not have an RBC Card (definitely get tho why you are happy with your set up)

For us we mostly buy Lottery Tkts @ PetroCanada … some gas

Cuz it’s more Lottery Tkts than gas we get a lot of PetroCanada promos that are good

Like these …

1000 Points for a 25 Litre Fill
2500 Points for a 25 Litre Fill
5000 Points for a 25 Litre Fill
Etc

Where 1000 PC Points = $ 1.00

Lol that’s when I fill at PetroCanada
Rest of the time I am shopping around whatever other deals are out there (and dependant on where I am)
Shell = AirMiles Promos
Cdn Tire = Down-pointing Red Triangle Rewards

Not many Mobil’s in Eastern Ontario
But now that Esso is gonna go all in on the PCO Program and allow BOTH Earns & Redeems
I am gonna take a look more seriously at Esso too … and the PCO Offers I get for gas

Bottom line … I want more than just gas with my fill up
I want some sort of reward … be it lower cost or decent points / miles etc
3 cents / litre is nice
More is even better

So as a strategic shopper gas is just another commodity … I shop around for

I am sure you already know that you can add a HBC reward card to your Petro Can acct to get 20% more points(I.e. 12 vs. 10).

Yup

Have had that hooked up for many years

Sad to see the similar partnership with CAA end

Between this triangle partnership I was able to generate a lot of extra points in each of those Loyalty Programs whenever I shopped at another
PC Rewards - HBC Rewards / Airmiles - CAA Rewards

My PC Rewards annually would get rolled over into my CAA Rewards Account (as an EVoucher) and I would take those CAA Bucks as a discount / downpayment on my CAA Membership

Was a sweet deal.

Sad to see CAA & PC end their partnership

yes, it was the good old days when we were able to link CAA, SPC, Morerewards & HBC.

Can’t speak for the other guy, but where I live:
Closest Costco Gas is nearly an hour’s drive away. Not going there.
Closest Gas+ is 350km away, so nope
My credit card pays 4% at gas stations, so 7¢/l at all of them at the current price. No need to drive out of the way to Mobil either, same “discount” everywhere
I full up either at Esso or a Petro Canada, whichever is more convenient. I’ll use the points card, because why not
At Esso I preferred Esso Extra points because they were good value when redeeming for car washes. That program’s days are numbered now.

Sorry I just came across this thread now.

I typically redeem Petro Points for Best Buy gift cards (for electronics and household appliances) or Hudson Bay's (for clothing or household stuff) and/or Wal-Mart for general items.

I wish there's a neat way to convert Petro Points to Aeroplan (or WestJet points) for travel. If you guys have any suggestions, I am all ears!

Is it not wise to use petro points towards filling up on gas?

Yes, you get the regular value of 0.1¢ per point that way, same as when redeeming on gift cards. I wouldn't do what @canabiz does and redeems for Best Buy gift cards. Paying for any part of a Best Buy purchase with a GC card would invalidate the extended warranty coverage that my credit card provides.
Unless there are bonus redemption promos when redeeming for gift cards (never seen that), I don't see the point of doing that over redeeming for gas.

Is there ever a promo for them? Right now all gift cards redeem at 10,000 points = $10, which is the same as the easier redemption of gas. I don't see the point of redeeming for GCs unless there is an extra value promo.

Yes redeeming for gas is always a good idea.

@Kiraly I think the pandemic has really changed a lot of our habits. I have been (and will continue to) working from home since March 2020. I have not been driving much since so saving on gas has not been a priority for us for the past few years.

Obviously, everyone's situation is different and I understand many folks have gone back to the office, either on a full-time basis or through a hybrid model. We have to look at our own personal situation and decide what's the best way to maximize and optimize the usage of Petro Points.
