Pls Recommend a LGA 1155 Motherboard

My existing desktop:
CPU: i5-2500K (LGA 1155)
MEM: 20GB DDR3
MOBO: Acer Aspire M3970 (Bios: P02 A2)
Chipset: Intel Sandy Bridge
Southbridge: Intel H67

My complaints:
x PCIe slots are mostly 1x lane Gen 2
x No USB 3.0
x Incompatible with i7-3770 CPU

I was given an i7-3770 CPU. To avoid having to dump my existing ram and CPU, I would like to upgrade only the motherboard to a better LGA 1150 mobo with USB 3.0 support, i7 support, and has at least 3 PCIe Gen2x4 (or better) slots. Price, < $110

Any recommendations?

Is it still possible to buy unused one?

It'll be any used boards that are available in your local area. The top ones that'll support a i7 3770 would be the P67, Z68 and Z77 chipset boards. There are "used" boards available on Aliexpress for ~ $80-100. A little cheaper if you're ok with a motherboard with B75/H61 chipset.

Z77 example: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003282886422.html

IMO best to see if there's any used ones available locally. If it's more than $50 for a motherboard... it's probably wiser just to spend a little bit more and get yourself a newer platform.

Yeah, for me my existing system feels just fine. Having to dump a perfectly good CPU and DDR3 ram seems silly to me for what will amount to a newer system which will feel exactly the same. I'm just trying to resolve some existing hardware issues for as cheap as possible. As long as the replacement board, new or used, comes in under the price of a whole new CPU + DDR4 ram then im ok.

Nice suggestion, coilz

snowcow, i'm messaging you. I'm very intrigued

Does the motherboard not support Ivy Bridge out of the box, perhaps with a bios update? There is still an active support site for the PC.

https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/s ... t/3673?b=1

This website here says its an Intel H67 LGA 1155 Gateway 6xSATA/4xDDR3 so I'm assuming it would support 3rd gen Intel CPU's but again, not much information to go on.

Also if you just changed the motherboards will your old PSU work with it? Does ACER use standard PSUs or do they have some proprietary type?

Unfortunately the motherboard does not support Ivy Bridge. I've tried inserting the i7-3770 but no luck. I've tried flashing the mobo with the Ivy Bridge BIOS (P03 A3) option to then be greeted with a not compatible message. I did some Googling to discover others having the same issue with the i7 and this mobo.

For the record, i am using an EVGA Supernova PSU 850w. The Aspire mobo works just fine with it.

Similar to @snowcow, I also have a motherboard with a few bent pins. Mine is a Sandy Bridge and it’s yours for the asking

If you have a steady hand and patient, I am sure you can straighten the pins on the socket and use it

Glad I'm not the only pin bender around here

Oh, I didn’t bend the pins. I purchased a skid of defective goods 10¢ on the dollar. I try to repair most of things but certain things are too time consuming to tackle

I have some Kaby Lake boards with bent pins too

Maybe look for refurb PCs local. Then mix and match the best parts.

This may be the best option, individual old components tend to be massively overpriced for things that were so plentiful just a few years ago.

I was in a similar situation and ended up getting a H87 mobo, cpu, and RAM off kijiji for just a little more than what people wanted for an older motherboard.
