Pool Vinyl shrinking.

The vinyl in the pool it's either shrinking or shifting. I have patched the gaps over the years with tape but its not holding anymore. There are no holes, it's not torn it's just going down and opening up at the top. The vinyl is original and super thick. At least 30 years old. When we bought the house it was already here.

Is there a way to fix it, the problem is that we cant drain the pool completely. We were told it will collapse if we do. The water pressure keeps the walls up. Not sure if true.

Pics below. Thanks.

It's time for a new liner. That looks horrible with tape.

You say its 30 years old, I say it has run its course and should be replaced.
im no expert, but In ground pool liners usually need replacing around the 10 year mark.

Another +1 for the superiority of Fibreglass pools.

It's well past its prime. Time for replacement.

We would have replaced it but we dont want to spend any money on it ATM. The liners seem to be expensive including work. Trying to make it look nicer by repairing it if possible. Need to last 5 more years till we built a new house with a smaller pool. This one is too big.

The buyers will just nail you to the wall with the cost of a pool liner when you sell, may as well replace it and enjoy it for the next 5 years.

That liner has served you well, but it's time for a replacement. We've had our pool for 28 years. We had a deer drown in ours and it tore the liner in its' attempts to get out. I spent a cold October night listening to my wife cheer loudly as Joe Carter belted the run that won the world series for the Jays while I patched and refilled the pool. I, too, was told you couldn't let the water out or the sides would collapse. Shift ahead 10 years or so and I had to replace the liner. The company came, removed the old liner, repaired a leaking line near the main drain. measured for a new liner and ordered a replacement. The pool sat for 2 weeks without water in it while I waited for the liner to come and for them to install it. The pool did not collapse. Mind you, I wouldn't want to go through a frost cycle. I still kick myself for missing that game!

@smacd Would you mind to share the cost of it?

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. We will demolish our house and build a brand new one with a smaller infinity pool. There are no buyers involved as we own it. It's just wont be done now but in the next 5 years.

$7,200 for a 16' x 32' hopper. A bit of that was for the main drain pipe repair. I live in the boonies, though, with very few options.
