I'm in the camp that I play no favourites with airlines. It's all fun and games with any airline until you experience a delay, lost luggage, cancellation, miss a connection, overbooking or a schedule change.

Go to any airlines social media page- no airlines are immune to this.

I agree..I have been flying my whole life...in this day and age, I can't believe I can fly to florida or vegas at the prices I pay...cheaper than 30+ years ago....NO airlines are immune to this stuff, it how you deal with them at the time is what I have learned.

Exactly. Since its founding Porter positioned itself as the little airline that could, with a superior service offering for a decent price (so, like an upscale but smaller-scale WestJet). Why they'd suddenly throw that reputation (which they worked so hard to earn over the years) out the window yesterday defies explanation. Porter didn't just drop down to WestJet level quality, they went all the way down to Sunwing with this. Admittedly I've never flown them (never had a need -- if I'm going to NY or Boston I'd rather drive it) but I was quite disappointed at this news. I expected so much better from them.

No respectable airline strands its passengers anywhere for 3 days unless conditions are bad enough the FAA ordered a ground stop. That certainly wasn't the case in Boston. If your plane is broken you bring in another or you book your pax with other carriers to get them home.

I've become so immune to this that I no longer care, and it is part of the travel experience. I have the airlines and travel insurance on my speed dial so tend to call them proactively and open a case file.

I don't mind the 4 hours (+) delays or delayed luggage, gives me an excuse to go shopping :)

Where to really see how airlines handle adversity, you're better off reading SkyTrax and TripAdvisor. In another thread I used those sites to direct another poster to not fly a certain airline. Those reviews all showed a pattern of bad service.

Also, just saw an article about punctuality (on-time performance) and surprise surprise Sunwing is one of the worst IN THE WORLD. Don't fly them if you want 1-your vacation to start on time 2-to get home on time after...

Do you fly Sunwing just so you can take full advantage of your insurance policy? :-)

Let's just say that I have noticed patterns on flight and luggage delays that I have a good idea if/when they will happen. There's no fact or science behind, just my gut based on my experience.

All I will say is that I am a firm believer of travel insurance (which many RFDer are too cheap to pony up) and will opt for the most expensive one that offers higher limits/coverage.

No need to defend your strategy, I actually applaud you. Insurance companies make a mint taking fees and never paying out (otherwise we wouldn't have all those injury lawyer commercials on TV right?), or worse, raising your rate when they do have to pay so you're paying it all back and then some (car insurance is this way).

So I like how you're actually getting value for that spending! I don't blame you for getting the better coverage... because you know you're going to get more paid back! Love it!

Yes, that Sunwing is late a lot more often than AC and WestJet. Numbers don't lie (unless you're one of those who goes by the "lies, damn lies, and statistics" rule).

I love it when my luggage is delayed.

Last trip Our bags didn’t make it onto Asiana connection and when we landed we had someone waiting for us at the gate escorted us to luggage claim where we filled out a form. My family and I got $600USD for a 24 hr luggage delay.

Smiling Face With Open Mouth And Cold Sweat on top of that I complained a little more and they paid for a driver to our hotel instead of our original plan to take the metro. Mind you we flew business maybe that’s why.

Link to the article?

The thing with websites like Skytraxx and Trip Advisor is that people are more likely to post a complaint then to post a positive experience. Don't get me wrong, I use both websites for my own personal research and contribute to both with negative/positive reviews.

Wow, you're fortunate they didn't try to avoid paying you.

My bad. Here you go... Sunwing is 8th worst in the world. Go figure another Canadian airline, Air Inuit, ranked the worst, but given the environment and market they operate in (small planes into tiny airports in northern Quebec and Nunavut), they can be excused.

you are comparing a vacation charter with an airline that has regularly scheduled routes...there IS a difference.

but sounds like you already know it all

In that case, why don't we see Transat on that list?

Keep in mind that this occurred in Boston and the employees could be just contractors. Sometimes it's just harder to manage at outstation. Also, expecting excellent customer service in Boston is a rare commodity.

Toronto
3 days?
That's nothing compared to the East Coast passengers that got stuck for OVER a week during CHRISTMAS time a few years ago when Toronto was hit with the crazy freezing rain storm. Some bags weren't delivered until AFTER the new year's.
I know all airlines flying in/out Toronto experienced similar issues that year, but the better managed ones would charter an addition aircraft or 2 to ship stranded passengers and bags out, i.e. AC and WS,

It's all about management and the company's willingness to spend (invest) money.
