I know brother printers are OK with generic ink refills and cartridges but read somewhere that HP tries hard to insist on use of their own cartridges and inks.

Get an Ink Tank printer if you want to be able to refill. But be warned, they clog up, if not used regularly. Otherwise I think Brother is the only one that allows such things. But afaik they also started adding checks to ensure non-refilled cartridges are being used in some printers.

Yes, clogging is an issue on inkjet printers.

I can speak from experience about HP and for the HP inkjet printer that I had, HP makes it difficult to use generic ink refills with their printer as their ink cartridges have a "computer chip" on them which the printer detects when the ink cartridge is inserted.

Using a generic cartridge can result in getting error messages (hit & miss) and using an actual HP cartridge which has been refilled can also sometimes get an error message on the printer screen. I'm not sure how the latter is accomplished but I think that the printer detects a unique serial number from the actual HP cartridge's computer chip and if the level goes up from a previous level, you'll get an error message. With the refilling, I had better luck (I brought my cartridges to be refilled at one of those kiosks in shopping malls) but would only trust the cartridge once for a refill as I've heard stories about the cartridges leaking after being refilled multiple times.

Unless you print regularly (at least once a week or every few days), I would suggest getting a laser printer as opposed to an inkjet.

Costco no longer refills ink cartridges. And as if that wasn't enough, they closed their Photo Centres.

The pixma or HP may have an aftermarket CIS (Continuous ink system) available, check your model. Looks like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuous_ink_system

Coolest thing I've seen was someone at work installed a CIS on an Epson Artisan 6 ink color inkjet. Until I got to work with it, I had never heard of such thing. Basically it's a large external ink reservoir with separate compartments for each color, and it has little hoses running to a pseudo-cartridge that slots into where you would put actual cartridges and directs the ink from the hoses directly to the printhead. It has a chip that apparently bypasses the cartridge checks, though very finicky and you need to make sure it never runs dry, never has air in the ink lines, and sometimes stops printing because it thinks it is out of ink. Otherwise unlimited dirt cheap printing, the colors are probably not exactly like OEM ink but for bulk color printing in a business environment it's close enough.

Every once in a while a pop-up shows up saying "Used or Counterfeit Cartridge Detected!" Just click No to all the questions until you get "HP's printer warranty does not cover repairs or services due to use of non-HP cartridge or ink". Click "OK" to dismiss this message and back to your printing. HP will display one message per cartridge, then you can print forever (with the chip usage information turned off). Legally, HP cannot stop you from printing because of a class-action lawsuit ($5 million lost and HP learned a lesson).

So yup, (re)fill yer boots. Costco Ink refill has its own website as well. Enjoy.

Your thread title says genetic ink, i thought you were doing some fancy biologicals printing.
That said it seems to vary by model so i cant advise for the models you have.

The colors wont be exactly as original since that same color is used across different p;rinter brands.

hmm..there is no OK option, just a cancel or dismiss. i have an HP deskjet 1055, it has a empty black cartidge & a generic (inkTopia) colour full cartridge. i ordered a refill kit from amazon so i will try refilling the black HP cartidge when i get the ink.

*Up-date* i refilled the black cartridge (just 5ml) & its working fine, but the generic is not.... im thinking it may have dried up so i may try blowing canned air into it.

just happy my black ink is flowing! Smiling Face With Open Mouth
