Pressure Treated vs. Red Cedar fence - Your preference, please

Dear friends, I need to replace the 24-year old wood fence which is about to fall on the pedestrian walkway of my house on a corner lot. In replacing the old fence, I plan to put a new fence at the backyard and the property boundary between my house and my neighbour's house which is now occupied by a tenant's family. Thus I will pay all costs of the 3 fences.

The total fence will be 183 linear feet including 2 gates. I plan to have 1 gate with 50-inch opening so that I could get a 48-inch trailer in if I had one in future. According to quotes that I have, the price difference of pressure treated wood vs. western red cedar is $10.50 for each linear foot.

Kindly please advise your preference. Thanks in advance.

It's my opinion that unless you intend to really treat and maintain the ceder fence to keep it looking new, then go PT.

Thanks for your advice and thanked. Yes, the price difference of 183 linear feet of P.T. vs. Western Red Cedar is about $1,900.-. If P.T. would require much less maintenance, I would go for P.T. because of my age and back problem. Thanks again.

No problem.

For what it's worth, I have about a 15yr old PT fence that you'd have a difficult time knowing isn't ceder. It silvered nicely. Make sure the installers put endcut liquid wherever they cut the PT (the PT only penetrates a little into the surface, so exposed ends are subject to rot.

Pressure treated. Slightly less maintenance if you suck at upkeep. That said to keep it lasting a while and in nice condition, you should also do maintenance on PT
Second the need for end cut. We redid our deck (took out rotted cedar previous owners had not maintained) and every hole and cut, hubby put the green end cut on.

Cedar doesn't crack as much as PT as it dries, but it's also softer (scratches easier) when used in horizontal applications. I think if $$$ is important for you, then PT with a high quality stain is your best bet.
