Previous owners mail

Me and my wife recently bought a house and we are still getting the previous owners mail. For the last 2 months I've been putting "return to sender" or "moved" but were still getting mail from them from the city of toronto and other stuff.

I have no contact information nor do I want to have any contact since they left us with a non fuctional stove that they swore was working. But thats another story.

They did have the nerve to show up at my house and ask for there mail 2 weeks ago, I told all mail that isnt ours gets sent back to the sender.

Recently this week, I got one of the Delivery notification cards from Canada post. Leagally what can I do? Its obvious this people are to cheap and lazy to have there mail forwarded. I'm sick and tired of have to find a mail box to drop off there mail. Since I've lived there I have dropped off about 75-100 enevolopes. The previous owner had his own landscape company

I've lived in my house for 7 years and still get mail for the previous 2 owners. By this point they all just go in the trash since they are mostly junk. But if it looks personal or handwritten address I return to sender.

The last house I had, I had put Moved on some mail I received, mainly newsletter, back in the mailbox. Nothing changed, after a while I just stopped bothering. Moved into current home almost 6 mths now, and we still get mail for the previous owner, and maybe the one before that, not sure, as a variety of names show up. The prev owner informed us that he would be coming by to pickup every so often so we just put it aside and give everything to him. Not a huge deal, but I think enough time has passed now, that it should stop. Considering some of the mail is from the Bank.

If you were left with a negative experience with the previous homeowners, I don't think you are obligated to sort their mail for them. My guess is that, if they were deadbeats to you, they are doing the same for other parties...hence the bills coming to their old address. A responsible person would arrange to have their accounts in good standing before moving. If you are feeling generous, then toss them back in the mailbox, otherwise, feed to the recycle bin. No guilt.

If you throw them out, they will keep coming. You need to alert the sender that the person has moved. Generally writing on the envelope that the person has moved and putting it back in the mail should do it. If you see the same people sending, you may want to open the letter and call them. It worked for me. I put up with deadbeats for 6 yrs. It was collection agencies as the others stopped early on when notified. Collection agencies are supposed to stop when you tell them they have the wrong person and they did but then the debt would be sold and it would start again. If they keep sending letters, eventually you will get the collection calls. They send letters first, then they call.

RTS often doesn't work, especially for bills. If you don't want to call the companies then the next time they show up tell them that they've had enough time and you've thrown them out. Hopefully that will get their attention. For junk mail, I mark the address as moved and use the pre-paid envelope provided to send it back. Works pretty well.

I still get some from RBC for the previous owners..been here for 5 years...I sent it back with return to sended a million times, finally took all the mail and went to RBC to drop it off in person to tell them these people don't freaking live here anymore...they said they would take care of it...you guessed it, still get the mail, into the trash it goes now, not worth my time.

I dealt with this for years.
At my previous home I would get more mail for other people than myself. There were about 100 different names on the mail too. Someone was pulling scams, many collection agencies, bills, etc.

Writing "return to sender" "person doesn't live here" didn't seem to help.
Opening up the mail and calling whoever sent it didn't do anything, they wouldn't change the address on their end.
Of course Canada Post was zero help.

It won't stop, just throw it in the recycling bin with the rest of the junk mail.

I printed a sheet of labels
'RETURN TO SENDER
NOT AT THIS ADDRESS'

First 6 months there was a ton of mail, after 3years just one in a blue moon.
The labels make it effortless though.
If its out of your way, I'd just bundle it up over a week and give to the post office (a person) and hopefully they will do something (maybe? Lol)

At least when we get community boxes forced on us, you can drop it in a sent box right there.

Only first class mail gets sent back to sender..
Just put a note on your mailbox or talk to carrier and you not get any more

My seller set up mail forwarding but I think it ends after 3 months so for a while, I kept getting their mail.
Since I'm not too far away from the selling agent, I just drop it off the mail at their office and she forwards it off back to the seller. Stopped after a while.

I did end up calling a few places that were sending mail to the previous tenant after I moved in. Most of them were pretty good about stopping.

I just leave it hanging out of my mailbox at home with Return to Sender written on it and the letter carrier always takes it.
