on early (or late) ice a spud is your best friend. well maybe besides a rope tied off to a tree on shore. or a fatter guy walking in front of you

the best part about taking someone new out on the ice are the really cold days when the lake is 'making' ice. the ice moans, groans, booms as it expands and that can be well.. alarming. :D ohh yeah, pressure cracks. those are great too. :D

The quality of this hut hut is similar to my Frabill hq300 6 man hut hut. Windows are equally bad and will probably break if the weather is too cold out. My Eskimo quickfish 2i hut hut is of much higher quality than both.

I would like to set up a shelter on my back deck to do ski tuning. Would this be appropriate? I need at least 6' wide, 6' high, and 4' deep. Also I need to be able to heat the space, hang a light, and leave the shelter set up until end of March.

It does rely on some intelligence to ensure proper ice conditions.
Everything from ice skaters to transport trucks can be supported, as long as that prerequisite is met.

The holes aren't large, and based on your self description, you definitely won't fit.

The ice pick is really a spud bar.

As you walk out you can hit the ice to gauge if it's weak or not.
Otherwise the best way to "know" is wherever you intend to fish, chat with the locals usually in online in FB groups.
There are old guys who are out on the lakes daily/weekly who report ice thicknesses.

I like to wait for a few -20*C days, which we haven't got this year.
Typically when I'm out ice fishing, we get anywhere between 10-20" of ice; and we always walk out so it's more than safe.
It also depends on if it's open bodies of water or not.

I don't know about this particular model but most other ice tents are not rain proof. They will leak at the seams when it rains.

I imagine firepits are dangerous in small enclosed spaces. There's only so much oxygen. And CO is dangerous.

I don't know how that plays out with propane heaters. It seems that ice fishers will want those.

It's a good idea to carry some Ice Claws to help you self-rescue if you happen to go in. In can be very difficult to pull yourself out of the water on to the ice. Devices like these can help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_claws

Its' almost exactly 6' x 6' at the base, and a bit wider at mid-height as the walls bow out. It's maybe 5' high, not exactly sure. The 2' x 2' anti-fatigue floor tiles work good, so 2 packs of 4 will cover all except one square (For me right by the door, but if you were ice fishing I guess the center.) I used a portable buddy heater to heat it, worked well. I've seen videos of tests of these with a CO meter and not emitted significant amounts (as they are a catalytic heater). I don't have any idea if it would last months, but I can't see it holding much of a snow load at all (like maybe 20lbs pressure to collapse the roof, as you do when you fold it up.).

It's for when you want to do something in winter, but don't want to spend $1k on gear and get broken bones skiing/snowboarding

MagicSnail wrote: How do you stay warm in something like this?
you still dress for ice fishing if you didn't have a hut. i would use it as a wind breaker myself and you can use a little lantern to heat that up, we do that even for regular camping when going to bed, keeps us warm.

ice fishing with no/very little wind is nice even at -10 -15 on semi cloudy day, its when the wind gusts then you get really cold. IMO. sit in the hut, warm up, fish in there too.

When we ice fish we have several holes around us, we would have to buy like 10 of these to cover all the holes. I have seen people build fires on the ice. kinda different, but the ice was 8-10 ft thick.

as others mentioned you could bring a propane heater, I go ice fishing with my 5yr son and a friend, I do little cooking for them while they were fishing inside of the tent. In Montreal, it usually gets to -15-20c outside, but it is about 15-20c inside of the tent where we could do 4-5 hrs without a problem, my son is okay, too. I got a 5lb propane tank off fb for 10 dollars, a fill of gas at CT is around 5-6 dollars, and could last me the entire winter.
