Alaskan ice melter contains sodium chloride and calcium chloride. Calcium chloride is exothermic, it generates heat when reacting with water. This is how it heats up and cracks ice as soon as you apply it. Sodium chloride lowers the freezing point of water, but is endothermic and requires heat to work, making it only effective to -7C but not colder. Look for the combination of both in the ingredients if you want performance similar to Alaskan ice melt.
