Property Tax - Paying Incorrect Account

Does anyone know what happens if I paid my property tax to the wrong account through online banking? Just found out when I got an overdue payment letter in the mail.

Have already contacted Toronto revenue services and awaiting their reply but wondering if anyone has gone through the same situation.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Toronto Revenue Services instead of Revenue Canada

If you're saying you paid Revenue Canada instead of the city, Revenue Canada will return your money but it might take a few weeks and you'll want to pay the city so they don;t go after you.

I paid the city through online banking and put in the wrong roll #.

You can also contact your bank to reverse the charges. If you have a good relationship with the branch, they can issue you temporary overdraft at little to no cost to pay the city to avoid further penalties while you wait for funds. Takes about a week.

I did this.

I paid an old property tax roll number (prev owner) when they actually assigned me a new one. I also only found out when I received an overdue notice.

I did this during covid shutdowns when no one was in office, so it took months for them to fix, but basically what you do is pay the amount to the right place (to avoid extra penalties), and email the city evidence of payment to the wrong roll#. Write the address you would like a refund cheque mailed to.

They will eventually write and send you a refund cheque for the amount even if they never personally reply to your email (lazy???? lol).

Call your municipal government and tell them what happened. Then they should be able to trace the payment to your name and transfer the money to the correct account.

The roll # is a mile long so I am sure they will get this type of issue every now and then where someone has inputted the wrong #. The good thing is that it's under their own system and you did not send it to an outside third party then you will have a hell of time trying to get it back.
