**** FYI for everyone here. *****

Ontario Licence-Free fishing week starts JULY 3/2021 to JULY 10/2021
Fish without a licence

Four times a year, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario without buying a fishing licence, during:

Family Fishing Weekend in February (February 13-15, 2021)
Mother’s Day Weekend in May (May 8-9, 2021)
Father’s Day Weekend in June (June 19-20, 2021)
Family Fishing Week in July (July 3-11, 2021)

Follow fishing rules

Licence-free periods remind us of the value of Ontario’s recreational fishery, and the importance of keeping it healthy for future generations. You must:

follow conservation licence catch limits
obey size limits and sanctuaries
follow the fishing regulations

With the rains in Toronto right now go out with a flashlight and some clear red covering over the flash light. Have some soil and a pair of pliers or if you want you can hand pluck the worms at night after a good rain storm. I've found you can still get worms off the lawn at dawn but easier at night. Make sure you stay outside for 40-60mins in the dark so that your eyes adjust to the darkness then you'll see them easlier.

Pro-tip, I recommend looking ta the worm for a couple seconds before plucking seeing which way it is moving to you can see if the head is out searching or if it is moving back into it's burrow. I recommend plucking if you see the worm out of the burrow at least 2.5 - 3.0 inches out. As you pluck the worms you'll get the hang of it then you'll be able to pluck them when they are 1inch. When plucking I find for me anyways a quick grab with my pliers and quick a wrist flick up motion pulls the worm out of the burrow fast.

If you're with a friend you could flick and release the worms onto the ground and don't worry about them going back into the ground quickly before your friend can put them into the bucket. If you get good and into the rythem of things you can be plucking every few seconds. If you spook out the worms in an area just keep on moving and come back to that area 15-20mins later. Beats paying like $4.00 for 12 worms and you'll have a ton of worms to share with other people to make friends. If you're done fishing with your worms pass them down to other fisherman in the area. I always bring extra worms with me as I find sometimes other people and families run out of worms and the kids get upset that they have to pack up early so I share some with them. Also good for flinging a few out to lure fish towards your area with a slingshot.

Microplastics and mercury are part of a healthy balanced diet.
Nothing left to fish in 2050 from overfishing? Who cares, everyone will be dead by then from climate change and pollution.
Ethics? The future? Who cares about any of that. Gotta be selfish and sacrifice the future for immediate rewards!
Now let's make some fish suffer and kill them!

Man the OP’s 3 paragraph explanation of how to spend an hour plus outside in the mud at night with a second individual digging for worms to save $4 is special. Can someone please donate some worms to him?

OP seems like a true wilderness guy, he's on another level compared to us city folk but I tip my cap to him nonetheless

You forgot impending global war. Thucydides Trap is evident now with the West vs China and Russia. Enjoy your free angling. While you can.

I always hated fishing... you need patience (which I don't have) and mosquito tolerance (which I also hate)...
and even if I manage to overcome those 2 obstacles, I may or may not catch a single fish, or if I do manage to catch one, it's the smallest fish on earth! lol
Kudos to the folks that like to fish - it's definitely not for everyone!

I would consider myself a true rfder and wilderness guy but don't know if I have it in me to hunt for worms in the rain at night lol.. OP is built different.

On a serious note, wouldn't it be easier to farm nightcrawlers through vermicomposting? @thedealhunter2000
