PS3 Owners - Contemplating HDD upgrade? Read Carefully RE: 3.56 Update

Beware of Update 3.56 - Issues with HDD swap/upgrade

There is an issue affecting owners of all the slim units and some later fat units when you upgrade the HD.

If your system has been updated to 3.56, do NOT swap your HDD out. When you put a new HDD in there, the PS3 will not read the update file from your USB or other storage device.

This only affects people who are already on 3.56 and want to swap the HDD.

This problem/bug was around before in 3.41, which they subsequently rereleased with a different md5 checksum.

I bought a new 120GB slim which was running 3.42 and didn't know about this issue. I updated to 3.56, did a backup of my data and then put the Samsung 500GB in there. It gives an error code and says the update file, which I loaded on three different USB flash drives, is corrupt. So right now, my slim does not work with the 500GB drive and will only work with the 120GB drive it came with. > :(

So if you are planning a HDD upgrade in the near future, here are your options:

- If you are not on 3.56: swap your HDD and then update to 3.56 (note that you won't be able to swap the HDD after 3.56, not until a new software updated is released)
- If you are on 3.56: do NOT swap your HDD
- Wait for the next software update

The 3.56 firmware prevents the newer Playstation 3 models (with 16 MB flash) from being upgradeable to a new hard disk drive. The following models have been affected:

Original Playstation 3 Model:

* CECHH
* CECHJ
* CECHK
* CECHL
* CECHM
* CECHP
* CECHQ

Slim Playstation 3 Model:

* CECH-20..A
* CECH-20..B
* CECH-21..A
* CECH-21..B
* CECH-250.A
* CECH-250.B
* CECH-250.A
* CECH-250.B
* CECH-251.A
* CECH-251.B

if they did then sony is really making that "it only does everything" tag line to "it only did everything"

yup. PSN+ are basically your beta testers. then again, Sony needs perks for more PSN+ subscriptions.

Well its looking like this is being corrected and that SOny is reissuing 3.56... whatever that means... with a fix. This issue will be gone soon.

thanks for the warning bigsky2. Wouldn't have known about this if you didn't post in the hdrive upgrade thread.

Is there an official word from Sony regarding this issue? I haven't been able to find much info besides the user complaints.
Always hungry ;)

It seems to be affecting a lot of PS3 owners to this date.

I have not seen any official announcement or blog post from Sony from any regions, and there is a very long 50+ page thread on the Sony EU forums about this issue.

Someone in that thread did say that if you still have your original HD, you can operate your PS3. But swapping your HD is still a no go. The new HD will not work and if you try to load the update on a USB flash drive, the PS3 cannot read the update file. Of course you cannot downgrade either, so using a < 3.56 firmware on doesn't work since your 3.56 is already half loaded on the PS3's 16MB flash. The other half is stored on the HD and this is where the bug or error occurs when you put another HD in the PS3.

If you have already upgraded to 3.56, do not swap your HD and format your removed HD. You will not be able to use your PS3 after. If you still have your previous HD with 3.56, put it back in your PS3 so you can at least use it. But for now, HD upgrades are not possible.

For me, I was able to exchange my PS3 unit from where I purchased it since it was brand new. My replacement PS3 shipped with 3.41, so I had no issues upgrading the HD.
