PSA: Koodo Charging for Free 5GB Add-On ($0 for 5GB) - increased to $15! & $15 10GB addon increasing to $20

So some RFDers in the Koodo loyalty thread are reporting that they are receiving email notifications that their data add-ons are going up in price!

1 person reported their 5Gb $0 add-on is increasing in price to $15!!!

You may remember the awesome thread about the free data add-on (went from 4gb to 5gb for $0)

Can others chime in if they have received - I'm more interested in the $0 5GB addon.

If so, is this only for folks on BYOD (not on tab)?

I'm from the public mobile legacy did not get a free data add on.
I have the $15 / 10G addon

When I checked my plan
I have $15/10G addon and $20/10G addon with total $35!
Looks like they bumped my $15 addon and did not remove the existing one. :(

Same here. Anyone else know if you can just.. remove the $20 variant? Or are they going to magically take away the $15/10GB?

$15 10G addon is now $20. The weird things is that on my account right now it’s showing both the $15 and $20 10GB addon.
Some people just don't get that online forum posts shouldn't always be taken seriously.

$85 1GB, 500 minutes, free evenings and weekend

A Canadian Telco increasing a price? Shocked, SHOCKED I am! A Bait and Switch you say? No Way!! The CRTC wouldn't stand for that.

ok, sharing my scenario if this helps.

- I haven't received any notice of a price increase via email
- I have 2x lines (PM migration plans)
- I just checked online & mobile services remain the same ($0 5GB addon still there)

Line #1 - PM Migration plan $35/5Gb + $0 5GB addon
- has a Tab bonus balance for 2 more months (tab is paid off)

Line #2 - PM Migration Plan $40/6GB + $0 5Gb addon
- has a Tab balance & Tab Bonus balance for 19months

I'm hoping Koodo won't touch the $0 5Gb addon given I have tabs on my 2x lines!

If they do I increase I may have to consider moving to another mobile provider

I am on BYOD many years, no email about this,
still shows $0 5GB add on , on both my lines

ahhh yes, I was reading too quickly. Looks like most have the $15 10GB addon which is increasing to $20 10GB.............only 1 person mentioned that the $0 5GB was going up to $15.

I'll edit my OP to reflect this....thx!

I got an offer in the mail from Bell for 15GB for $50. About what my Koodo will cost but with 5GB data more. But it's Bell... I've been with Koodo for five years with this add-on. It's bull crap. Got a phone from them, too.

If the $0 5 GB add-on was increasing to $15, I would have thought this would have been mentioned by several RFD members. There are 5 Koodo ($40/6 + 5 GB freebie) lines in my family and none of us have received a notification email or text.

Hour on the phone with Koodo to prevent the price increase. Nada. Same old spiel about "best plan best service price increase because Koodo wants to give the best service" a.k.a. how can Robellus use this money to f*ck consumers up the arsehole during the pandemic even more.

We could use some more data points on the add-ons that are having their price increased. When were they added? Was it a loyalty add-on or a targeted offer? etc.

Things like this have come up before. There were reports of $25 plans getting increased to $30 and later $20 plans being increased to $25. But not everyone with a $25 or $25 got hit. When the pre-owned S10s and the loophole showed up last year, some people could get it to work and others couldn't, even when they appeared to have the same plan.

I suspect there's multiple internal codes floating around that effectively give the same plan or add-on, but are different in the back end system. Koodo has decided that some of the data add-ons need to change, but not everyone with a 10GB for $15 will be affected. The question is what attributes do the plans in question have in common? I'm guessing age, but we need more data. Some of those $15/10GB plans go back to at least Aug 2018.

I’m expecting mine to be bumped up $5 more. I am on the $15/10GB addon but still have one month of tab left — which is why they can’t increase my price yet. I’m jumping ship to Zoomer before they even get to milk this increase out of me!

The only reason you don’t see any increases yet is that you’re still under a tab. IIRC, CRTC mandates that carriers cannot change plan prices when user is in contract. You will most likely see an increase once your Tab bonus weans off.

afaik, add-on prices can increase under contract

from The Wireless Code, simplified

D. Changes to contracts and related documents

1. Changes to key contract terms and conditions

Hmm, that's pretty grey area to me in terms of the wording. It only states it must not "change the KEY contract terms and conditions of a postpaid..."

One could challenge a $14 add-on is part of the key contract terms as it is a significant portion of the bill (aka. $25 voice + $15 10GB) as that add-on serves as the DATA portion of the plan and that the charge can be refused by the user as per D.1.ii
Additionally, D.1.iii suggests that they can only change the key contract terms IF it benefits the user.

I'm no lawyer though... so take me with a grain of salt.

Not to impressed with this change... cancelled my add-on and moving to Shaw . $15 for 3GB can’t be beat.

From a customer service perspective they could have at least notified u a via email earlier.
