PSA: Very major delays with Sunwing yesterday/today - be aware

I learned about this (unfortunately) after I dropped my folks off (YYZ) to head off to their vacation; seems like there has been total and complete chaos with Sunwing flights over the past few days - both from Canada and in other 'sunny' destinations (seems like a major computer issue/system failure of some sort). In case you've got something planned in the next few days, I'd check out the situation before heading to the airport.

Here's a taste of the issues -

And more can be seen here via people's tweets -

I don't understand something. If online is DOWN, why the hell they don't have a MANUAL back up? Are we all so dense and useless without a computer?

It’s an international airline not a cash register

Sunwing is processing flights manually

From https://www.narcity.com/toronto/sunwing ... -heres-why

According to Sunwing Media, they're working "day and night" to make sure everyone gets to their vacation or on a flight back home, and have managed to process up to 15 flights since the outages on Monday.

"In the meantime, while we continue to process flights manually, additional flight delays can be expected and customers are advised to sign up for flight alerts on Sunwing.ca."

Sunwing isn't the only airline to run into computer system problems.

Yes. For one second, image whatever you want to do and the computer/instrumentation (all run on CPU/chips) go down, for public transit, for traffic control, stores, restaurants, your computer/cellphone, car, etc. If the restaurant or store's system is down, they have to add up everything you ordered, plus tax, and ask you to pay cash (system down, can't tap your CC)... Maybe you can get cash somewhere (bank's ATM can be down) and can verify the store's manual calculations quickly, but for many people things will be slower.

Things like this are par for the course when it comes to charter airlines. I’ve flown with them years ago and Air Transat and saved significantly over AC or WJ, but you know in the back of your mind you could be delayed hours or days.

Similar thing could happen to AC, but they have more infrastructure and manpower to fix it.

I think some (not all) of the those that are impacted are being overly dramatic though.

Hmmm that has nothing to do with infrastructure and manpower. If your network fails, even if you're bigger, you're gonna struggle just as much because you have a MUCH larger network. It has happened to large us airlines in the past. It's not like having a technical issue with a plane. A small airline like Flair, Lynx will struggle in that case. AC will simply use another aircraft that serves that purpose. Westjet and Air Transat also have back up planes in the event one has issues that cant be fixed quickly.

This can happen to any airline in the world. People are clearly being overly dramatic because compensation $$$$
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I was referring to Aircraft replacement and pilot hour issues, that’s left people stranded with the Transat and Sunwing. It’s happened over and over again.

Sunwing gets help to get more delayed flights off the ground

"any passenger whose flight has been delayed by more than three hours would receive financial compensation. The airline is also allowing those whose flights were delayed between April 19 and April 22 to delay their trip as far as June 23 if they wish to do so."

Sunwing deals with delays for third day, blames cyber breach

Aviation authorities in both Canada and United States want to ensure the system, provided by Airline Choice, is secure before it is reactivated.

In an e-mailed statement to the Canadian Press Wednesday, Airline Choice described the breach as a “data security event” that affected a limited number of its computer systems.

“As a precaution, we took certain systems offline to secure our environment. We also immediately launched an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the event,” the company said.

I wonder if the breach is a ransomware attack similar to what happened to VOIP.MS. They needed a couple of weeks to recover.

Flew into YVR last night and saw a humungous pile of suitcases in the arrivals area. Brutal. Over the Easter holiday weekend, nonetheless.

This sort of delay is exactly why you should be a member of the 111 private club.
