PSA: WeChat uses data on voice/video calls even if you're on wifi

Just thought I'd post this as a bit of a warning to WeChat users .. especially those of you who may have parents or older family friends who use WeChat

My dad had been complaining that he was running out of data every month. He is on the 1GB plan on Public Mobile and outside of things like google maps or wechat use, he doesn't really use data very often. I took a look at his data usage and it turned out WeChat was using up all his data.

It turns out WeChat has a setting enabled by default that uses data to "improve voice quality" even if you're connected to wifi.

I don't use WeChat myself so I have to paraphase or try to remember the location of this setting from memory but it's something like General -> Photos and Video call settings -> and at the bottom of the screen "Use data to improve voice quality".

Turned it off and now his data usage is normal.

How would extra bandwidth increase voice quality?

Sounds more like they are sending data back to China servers.

Yeah, it's been like that for a long time, at least for the past year.

Here in Canada, where population density is like 1, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi works reasonably well. In China, population density is 10, Wi-Fi interference is a big a problem. Even the cheapest data packages are on 5G, so a lot of people don't use Wi-Fi anymore.

Good to know.

It's not uncommon for my dad to be on voice/video calls on WeChat for a few hours per week so I don't know why this was seemingly only a recent issue for him. Or I guess we only just noticed it now. And he only made those calls while on wifi so I didn't clue in on it at first.

This massive bloatware Wechat should be corrected for its insidious behavior or otherwise should be booted out of Google play, I am Chinese and I hate it passionately...
