15GB 4G for $40 Lunar New Year Promo

Deal Link:
Price:
$40.00
Retailer:
Public Mobile
Public Mobile has their $40 for 15GB Data Cell Phone Plan on promo again.
Also comes with their 3X Points back for 1 year ( Approx $6 Value/Month ) as a stack.

Believe the last time this promo was a little before black friday?

Lunar New Year Deal
$40.00
was $60.00
3x Points-back
Earn $6.00/mo in pts value⁺
15 GB
Data¹ at 4G speed
Unlimited
Canada-wide minutes
Unlimited
International Text and Picture Messaging

With the first year 3x rewards points, price point comes down to about $35/mth for the first year.

For those unawares, for PM you need to visit a Telus Corporate Store to buy a SIM card physically, or order one off their website to you.

Possible upside: Public Mobile works on a pre-paid basis therefore there is no contract and no credit check required to sign up.

Ask anyone who works at a cell phone store/company - there are no end dates for promos.

Promos are accessed every morning/day (literally a spreadsheet they download from carriers) and are subject to expire at the end of any given day. Essentially, whenever the competition (Bell, Rogers, Freedom) chooses to stop their promos, the rest all follow suit.

I switched my wife's phone over to this plan a few months back (from Koodo over to Public Mobile) but she's been complaining about reception since the switchover.

I know everyone says the Public Mobile network = Koodo, but I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing a decrease in their cell quality after moving to Public Mobile.

When checking her APN settings, I stumbled upon this website which suggests that each network runs on different 4G frequencies:

Public Mobile 4G LTE Band 4 1700/2100
Koodo 4G LTE Band 4 1700/2100 (LTE Band 5 850, LTE Band 2 1900, LTE Band 12 700, LTE Band 17 700, LTE Band 13 700, LTE Band 29 700, LTE Band 7 2600*)
*These frequencies of Koodo may not have countrywide coverage in Canada

https://apn-canada.gishan.net/en/apn/koodo
https://apn-canada.gishan.net/en/apn/public-mobile

Anybody know if Public Mobile is truly not able to access LTE bands 2/5/7/12/13/17/29? That would be quite a revelation if Public Mobile is really limiting 4G access to only Band 4.

PM: 4G LTE and LTE Advanced: 700 MHz, 850 MHz, 1900 MHz and 2100 MHz downlink and 1700 MHz uplink (AWS)
Koodo: 700 MHz 850 MHz 1900 MHz 2100 MHz downlink and 1700 MHz uplink (AWS)

Telus owns PM and Koodo. So PM is using Telus Network.

Right now it's the best permanent deal without an expiring date. i.e. 12/24 month price then it goes back to a higher regular price.

Of course you got a great deal this past Boxing day/BF promo. No time machine to turn back the clock.

I agree with you it’s not a permanent plan but 24 months is not a small period of time. Something else will comes along by that time

Did you get any winback call/offer from Koodo? How long were you with Koodo for.

The frequencies for both PM and Koodo are the same since they are both on the Telus network. I suspect the the cell quality is because Koodo supports Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE (Voice over LTE) but PM does not. With VoLTE you'll get: Simultaneous use of voice and LTE data.

Is you plan prepaid and therefore is month to month and requires no credit check?

If not; false equivalency.

I don’t agree. There are always deals coming along before the 24 months period ends
