Question about Electricity Usage, Adapters, and Security Cameras.

Hi All,

So I have a security cam that I want to install in my home.

I have two choices for where to put the camera:

  1. Connected to an outlet inside the house
  2. Connected to Front Porch Light with a lightbulb-outlet adapter

I was curious if there was a difference in terms of electricity usage from either method? If I keep the camera on the front porch light I would have to keep the switch on at all times, so would it cost more electricity? Could there be any considerations I might not be thinking of i.e. fire hazard?

Also, for those that have security cameras, I'm curious to hear your how have you set them up for your house.
Just to start, I was thinking of having two cameras, one outside the house and one inside monitoring the front door and backdoor areas respectively.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Have you considered an IP can that utilizes POE?

Mine are such.

Gosh. Nickel and dime.

Electricity usage is minimal.

Do you turn off your modem at night since it wastes electricity? You don't use the internet while sleeping.

I knew someone (at least 2 persons) unplugs the power to the modem, cheeze few pennies save but $$$ to replace modem. He claims the modem is hot...

hahahahahahahahaha ....

Modem replacements are FREE by the ISP provider.

If Modem is hot ... get a cheap USB Fan and plug it in to cool it .... oh ... the USB fan uses electricity ... guess that is a no no.

Should turn off the cellphone too when heading to bed because it uses electricity when you need to charge it.

This is DSL modem from me, I used it like 4 years, It’s like 10 years old; I gave away when I went cable. This is not from ISP.

USB fan? What? Cost more money. Haha

For him - no comment...

Let's say you have a 60-watt incandescent lightbulb and you are paying 12 cents per kWh of energy. Leaving the bulb on the whole day will therefore cost you: 0.06 (60 watts / 1000) kilowatts x 24 hours x 12 cents = approximately 20 cents in one day.

A security camera is maybe around 15 watts maybe, but can vary by model and application. But overall will be less than maybe half or less of the 60 watt conventional light bulb cost noted above.

Of course, though, I’d advise that the outside light bulb should be an LED of maybe 6 watts. This would dramatically reduce the $0.20 per day electricity cost of the bulb. Then, for even more savings, if the bulb is triggered by a light sensor then the switch can be left on all day and the bulb wouldn’t draw any electricity until it gets dark out. This would roughly half the cost again.

So, here’s the math:

60 watt bulb 24x7 = $0.20 per day
6 watt LED 24/7 = $0.067 per day
Light sensor added = $0.033 per day

And to cap it off, if you’re on Time of Use rates the cost per day for the best combo above is probably like $0.02 per day!

Did this quickly on my mobile while distracted with something else so I may have made a math mistake, but really, the electricity cost shouldn’t really be anything more than a trivial consideration.

Your image shows you removed the porch bulb and installed the camera in its place. So there is no differnce in electricity consumption when connecting the camera to an outlet inside the house vs connecting to a Front Porch Light with a lightbulb-outlet adapter. The camera will draw identical power

I am assuming there are no other exterior fixtures on thesame switch? If there is then you have to add the consumption of the other bulbs.
