Question about Luggage during long lay over.

Wondering if anyone knows what happens to the luggage during a 16 hour lay over.

My nephew is traveling from UK to Halifax with Air Canada and he chose a 16 hour layover in Montreal to spend a few hours with us. We're wondering about the luggage. Does he claim them and recheck for his Halifax flight or is it done for him by the airline.

How do we make sure?

Thanks.

If its a single ticket the luggage should be transferred but like the poster above replied, you should call in to make sure. This is how my layover usually works.

if it's an overnight layover, it's very likely that your nephew needs to retrieve the bag.

If you arrive from outside of Canada and have a connecting domestic flight, you have to pick up your checked bags, clear customs, then drop off your checked bags and clear security again.

BUT, a number of years ago Canada launched ITD OSS (International-to-Domestic One-Stop Security). Some people on some flights will get the ITD OSS code on their boarding pass. If you do, then you do not need pick up your checked bags, you clear customs without your checked bags (and assuming customs lets you in), then you enter the domestic side of the airport without clearing security again:
