RATS! In garage ceiling/ bedroom floor

Well we definitely have RATS in our garage ceiling. We set traps in our attic last week and caught 3 mice and haven't caught anymore up there since. We caught 3 rats in our garage ceiling!
We live in townhouse so how are these garage ceilings generally constructed? Is it just an 8 or 10" joust separating the garage ceiling from the master bedroom or is there a sizable gap between the garage ceiling and bedroom floor?
Can the rats gain access to the inside of the house from within the garage ceiling?
We would like to get a trap in the ceiling somehow but it would require cutting an access hole in the garage ceiling :(

Any other suggestions or ideas would be great. We don't want the mouse dying and rotting under the bedroom creating a stink!
There should be about 12" space between your bedroom floor and the garage ceiling. Mice can squeeze into a hole the size of a nickle. Depending how long this has been going on, you may want to get a professional in to get rid of the problem. You need to prevent them from getting into the attic or be diligent about taking care of them before they mass breed.
One dead mouse is not going to stink up your entire house but a few dead ones could.

Today we made a hole in the garage ceiling and caught a freaking RAT! it's not a huge rat but it's a rat. Time to call a pro. I have no idea how we got rats, we are super clean and never leave food out, I am so stressed out right now!

Yes, call the pros.
Count your blessings, you could have been this couple that found bats
https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/bat-infes ... -1.3798269
They hired bat specialist Stephane Boucher, who went into their attic – a part of the house that the pre-purchase home inspector had skipped, they say.

Boucher says there was “a foot, two feet in some spots,” of guano, which had piled up due to hundreds of bats that may have been living there for decades
From wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guano
Guano is the accumulated excrement of seabirds and bats.

They usually come for food and warmth. Do you keep garbage in your garage?

They like nesting in fiberglass batts.

You guys so nonchalantly comment on why rats get into homes lol. Are rats common in homes? I have never even seen a rat in my life until this all started. We thought it was mice!
We can deal with mice but rats?
So far we caught 3 large ones and one small but there is still something in the ceiling we can hear. We left the pest control guy a voicemail and hopefully he calls back soon.
Can anyone here recommend rat control for the Bradford area or nearby? We are just north of Bradford.

Try these guys: https://www.apexwildliferemoval.net/

We used them 3 months ago when we had mice in our attic.

I found mice in my basement last year, set up traps myself and caught a couple. That's when I called the professional and signed a contract with Abel pest control for a year. They have got good service and visit every 2 months to reload the bait stations.
Haven't seen a dead mice since then...better to let pros deal with this, since they reproduce fast!

Had an exterminator in this afternoon and even he was amazed that rats were in the ceiling. These bastards are smarter than we thought because they are not setting off the traps. I can hear them as I am typing this message!
Amazingly enough they have not actually got into my actual house. Does anyone know how the walls of a garage are built and if they can get in or not? Is the home usually sealed well from the garage because a car can be parked in it?

Sorry, I'm a bit late to this but if you haven't found anyone yet I'd highly recommend HELP PEST CONTROL. They'd definitely service the area. Great company, I've been using them for years for an annual spider spray, and have had them come take care of a random carpenter ant issue a few years ago as well.

Best of luck! I hate mice... i can't even imagine rats!!!

We have caught 4 large ones so far and 1 small one. The level of noise has gone down a lot now but I know there are still some left. We cut two huge holes in our garage ceiling and placed multiple traps but the rats are smart and will avoid anything new for a few days apparently.
We still have no idea how they got into our completely sealed garage ceiling and the exterminator cant figure it out either. The house is sealed all around but we are adjoined to another townhouse.
There has been a fair bit of construction going on around here so I can only think that the rats are being pushed out of their natural habitat, the exterminator agrees.
We will likely rip down the entire garage ceiling in the spring because I can only imagine what damage was done to the insulation, wiring, etc. This builder actually installed a heating duct under the bedroom floor that was left open; I guess to heat the floor because it's above the garage? Scary as heck because the rats could go in this duct!
