RAV4, Tiguan, or CX-5

Hi all, my lease is almost up on my RAV4 and I'm looking at getting a new RAV4, or possibly switching over to a Tiguan or CX-5. Does anyone have any thoughts on the comparison between the three vehicles here? I know the RAV will probably come out on top in terms of resale value at the end, but is there a major difference in terms of quality? From what I've read online, the RAV and CX-5 come out a bit bitter than the Tiguan, but the thing looks aesthetically pleasing. I've also gathered the three vehicles have comparable fuel economy, but I could be totally wrong about this.

Thanks

Tiguan is plastic junk. Drove one as a rental in the States. It feels like a Toy RC car with squeaks and rattles driving over anything other than brand new road. Out of the three you listed CX5 is probably the best overall package, although the Rav4 Prime would we worth considering due to gas prices in this day and age. Good luck finding one though.

OP,

The Mazda CX-50 will be coming out soon. I heard in April? I would definitely check it out as it’s bigger and has a pano roof

It's crazy but I would make sure all three are available when you need them to be given the shortage. That may rule one or two out right away. I'll assume you're leasing again.....are they all in the same ballpark with respect to pricing/monthly payment?

Good to know, thanks. Was it a recent model? I suppose this is unlike the usual VW quality?

Thanks! I'll check this out :).

Yup, it's crazy. I know the RAV4 Premium has a 4-6 month wait (the dealership said Toyota Canada would extend my current lease until the other vehicle arrived). Curious how this would work if I were to switch to Mazda or VW. I suppose Toyota would want the car back and wouldn't extend the lease. All are ~$100 of each other monthly. I think the RAV is a bit more.

You should strongly consider buying out your existing lease as you'll most certainly have some decent positive equity there. Then you can either continue to drive it or if you want a new vehicle can use it as a trade and get more $$$.

exactly this. Used vehicle prices are insane at the moment. The dealer is probably itching to get your car asap to sell on their lot.

I haven’t driven Tiguan so can’t say from experience, but from reading reviews and watching on YouTube vw has apparently fixed this issue with the refresh. So the 2022s are more refined and should be better.

Cx5 has the smallest space of all the vehicles op listed, while Tiguan is the roomiest.

But like others have mentioned, I’d wait for cx50. It looks really nice and I believe starts at $37.5k with leather, pano, awd.

Resale continues to be good, I would buy it out and keep driving it before your next car shows up.

I won't extend existing lease unless you don't have cash to buy it out.

CX-5 Turbo is still the most fun SUV of the bunch. But the design is aging.

I like how the CX-50 looks but weary of early teething problems.

Thanks. Any idea when the CX-5 is due for a refresh?

The Toyota dealership is offering me $6500 in positive equity. Any idea if I could end up getting more than this selling privately?

You probably could get a bit more than whatever the dealer is offering. But is your time and hassle worth the extra $xxxx? For me a no hassle trade and potentially saving on taxes is more of a benefit. No need to get it checked out by your private buyer and stuff like that..

It sounds like a fair offer. I know you could do better selling privately but keep in mind it'll be a lot more work. You have to buy out the vehicle, then list it for sale, then show it to prospective buyers, etc.

If it were me I'd probably just trade it in and save myself the hassle. Plus, by going this route you'll get to drive the existing vehicle until the new one is ready so you'll never be without a vehicle.

I was at the Mazda dealer earlier today for service.

They have only 3 new cars in the showroom. A "3", a CX-9, and a CX-3 GT. In other words, inventories are low, basically there are no cars.

If your lease is almost up, can you get a car at the right time? Otherwise, you may as well extend the lease, or buy it out.

It got "refreshed" for 2022

But while Mazda is denying it, most likely the cx-5 will be gone much like the cx-3 did with the cx-30 here. There's way too much overlap between the CX 50 and cx5,

My '16 RAV4H is still doing great except for some rail dust and minor surface corrosion on one of the door sills and liftgate.

It drives like $hit but at least it's been relatively maintenance-free which count these days.

with gas prices RAV4 Hybrid. Since you lease and dont care about keeping I would test drive all three and decided. The VW is got that german driving dynamics. Toyota much improved the feel of theirs vehicles too.

Me personally RAV4 hybrid. Test drive, look at the fuel consuption, space, etc what you like?

ps If you want quality and something that lasts remove VW, they are not known for "lasting".

CX-5 will continue as is until its retirement when they have enough production numbers out of the Alabama plant building the CX-50. CX-50 is carry the segment in the future.

I expect CX-5 to be around for a couple more model year as is and then gone.

If obvious that's what you want. But can you get one, and how long of a wait? Venza has much less value but at least it's a hybrid.
