RBC Rewards: LAVA HOT Apple Watch Sport 42mm Space Grey w Blk Sport Band: 47,850 pts

The Apple Watch Sport 42mm Space Grey Aluminium Case with Black Sport Band is on sale on RBC Rewards (sorry to the non-members) in their Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale for 47,850 points which includes taxes and shipping. Given that on RBC Rewards a $250 Visa gift card is 42,000 points, that makes this watch cost about $284.82 worth of RBC points all-in. From Apple directly the same watch is $519 before tax or $586.47 all-in (13% tax in Ontario). RBC is saying it's 35% off but based on this math it's more than 50% off. I think this is a steal (maybe an error?).

Here's the link on Apple's page for the watch: http://www.apple.com/ca/shop/buy-watch/ ... tep=detail

Anyway, I bought one. Enjoy.

**EDIT: 42,000 points is $420 for travel or other points conversions so maybe not super hot depending on how you use your points **

I'm not familiar with RBC rewards, but I have an RBC Visa.

How would I go about buying this?

42,000 points = $420 travel points....so you're getting $100 off. Still a good deal :)

You'd need to have an RBC Visa that earns points. You can check RBC's site to see if your card is one of them. Assuming you have one of those cards, you'd also need enough points to redeem for this on the RBC Rewards site.

Wrong calculation. 42,000 points means $420. Giving $250 gift card if you use 42000 points. Because they always gives less conversion rate if you take cash credit (visa gift card) from RBC points.

You can't just assume it's other way too.

Sure, I don't redeem for travel so I always look at the gift cards. But even if you do redeem for travel it's still ~$166 off which I've never seen for Apple Watches.

I you have converted your RBC points to Avios during last years (50%) you could have:

1) almost 2 ROUND-TRIP (80 000 Avios points) from Montréal (Toronto) to Miami in Business Class (worth more than 2 000$ CDN per round trip, total 4 000$)

or

2) almost 4 ROUND-TRIP (40 000 Avios points) from Montréal (To) to Miami in coach (almost 700$-800$ CDN per round-trip, total 2 800$)

Depends how's your view on the RBC points (or how you're using them)...

way better than the meagre 284$ for the Apple Watch...

That's wonderful if:
a) you have a time machine
b) you need to travel between Montreal and Miami

Don't forget that you've spent at least $38k (assuming 1.25 pts/$1 at best) to reach this amount of points to get this watch ;-)

Anyways it's a good reward for those that want it.

I rather have merchandise than travel rewards.. at least merchandise will last a couple of years where as travel is only a two day flight..
