Reading Tutor Recommendation

I’m looking for recommendations for a reading tutor for a Gr 2 student.

Does anyone have experience with Kumon, Sylvan etc or any online tutors.

My nephew was using the online apps, Academy Khan etc but he doesn’t appear to be fully retaining the info. We’re thinking some one on one support would be helpful.

We would like to ensure he is confident going into grade 2. His teacher recommended a tutor for the summer. He was working with a family friend but they doesn’t seem to be helping.

Thanks in advance.

Ps he is read to every night and encouraged to read along but he doesn’t seem to be improving much

What is the issue? Is it more of comprehension? Pronouncing words?

He currently struggles on how to apply short and long vowels as well as remembering site words. He’s strong as sounding out letters etc but then gives up trying to pronounce the full word.

We worry that he is losing interest in reading at such an early age. My kids try to encourage him but they are younger than him so he’s not as influenced by them.

My wife taught my 2 older kids to read using this book with great success. It takes some effort to learn the curriculum and ~30 mins per day. Neither of my kids made it past lesson ~75 because they were reading.

My 5 year old currently reads chapter books without issue and has solid comprehension and retention. We check by reading the book ourselves.

Highly recommend. We were recommended this book by a homeschooling parent/teacher.

Learning long and short vowels are the hardest, even my son going into grade 4 still encounters it. My rule with kids is always make an attempt first.

Have you tried using those step books to read? Short books and the words are repeated often, so being able to read one book by himself may boost his confidence in reading. https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/bo ... 8e6c70d574

Should look at GoStudent.org/CA

Fully Virtual learning experience. Tutors range from University Students all the way to Certified provincial teachers. Some of my extended family who are young and in University use it to earn some extra income teaching English, Stats, etc to children and youth (I think they offer the service for adults looking to learn also).

I have a friend who works for Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board who started on their platform last month and tutors elementary kids on the side. He says it's been a great experience thus far.
