Rear Calipers and Brake Pads

Hi Redflagdealers, can anyone tell me what is a fair price for replacing both rear calipers and brake pads (including labour cost)?

This is if I am going to a local GTA garage.

Hi SaveTilUDropers, can you tell us what the make, model and year is so we can have an idea what the parts should cost?

Could be anywhere from $200 to $20k depending on the car.

We're swapping calipers and rear pads, what about the rotors? Or is this what the OP actually meant?

Update - ^ beat me to it ......

Wonder why OP is assuming the rotors are still within spec. and don't need replacing?

Or maybe he meant to say rotors and not calipers?

As already mentioned, year, make and model is vital info. before anyone can estimate the time required and parts cost.
Brake wear sensors required? Full brake fluid flush needed? New, rebuilt or remanufactured calipers need bench bleeding? Etc.

To replace pads and rotors for most vehicles, it is $250-300.

To replace the caliper with a re-manufactured caliper is around $100-150 each. Then you will have to bleed the brake lines which will be around $100.

Price will vary from shop to shop.

Thanks for the responses!

My model year is 2016 Honda Accord V6. There was problem (stuck) with one of the rear caliper, and the mechanic told me I should replace both rear caliper and the brake pads.

I did ask about the rotors, but I was told I do not need to replace them. I was quoted for $700 for two rear calipers (re-manufactured) and two rear brake pads (labour included). Another $100 for the break fluid change.

I thought that was little bit deep, and this is not from a dealer.

Please tell me if that price is too much or not. What is a fair price?

Are there any good shop/mechanic that anyone can recommend me?

Hi BDSL, Thanks for your information.

Does the price you mentioned includes labour cost? Or it is parts only?

If not what is the fair rate per hour for independent mechanic/local garage?

What was the symptom that made you have them checked? Do you trust the mechanic? My calipers are 20 years old and have never seized. I'm surprised that your 5 year old calipers are seized.
You can get new rear calipers for $314 CAD incl taxes/shipping/duty at rockauto.com, so $700 isn't too bad installed. But another $100 for the fluid change is a bit of a rip off, it should be included for $10 of fluid.
The real question is if you really need it changed.

I was detecting burnt smell getting off the car, and it was hot. The car was slowing down so what quickly without brake apply.

The mechanic is a friend's referral. I was shocked that I needed to replace the calipers so soon. It sucks even more when it was just out of warranty.

Unfortunately, DIY is not an option for me. I am not smart enough to do DIY.

So what is the reasonable price for two rear calipers, rear brake pads, installed and with brake fluid change?

For your Accord, to replace pads and rotors, it is around $250-300. I recommend you change your rotors since you are already there.
To replace the both calipers with a re-manufactured calipers is around $300.
Then you will have to bleed the brake lines which will be around $100.
+Misc fluids/hardware, etc...

SO you are looking at +$700

I suspect the owner didn't bleed the fluid, clean/re-lub the calibers over the 5 years span.
Or maybe brake overheated because he didn't release the emergency brake properly and/or riding the brakes when going downhill.

I better look for someplace else then. I was quoted $800. That $100 more, and without the rotors too.

I was looking at L& auto that you linked. I will also search the Redflagdeal threads to look for other places.

Another popular garage is iGarage.

As a Honda owner I would pay more for OEM pads. Rotors can be aftermarket but get the coated ones.

I would not put new pads and calipers without replacing the rotors too.

Hondas eat rear disc brakes, at least on my car.

You are probably right on bleed the fluid and calibers.
I was going to Honda dealerships since the beginning. I questioned them about the "B1" services, and I asked them what they do.
The service advisors said it was inspections about different parts. If there was problem they will look into it and quote me for repair.
They never said anything about cleaning/re-lubing calibers.

I did forgot to release the emergency brake three/four times. Only for a short time each, maybe 1 to 2 minute max.
I do not ride the brakes, even going downhill.

Anyhow, I am sure I am partly responsible for the failure of the calipers. For one, I could of make sure the calipers was properly serviced to begin with.

I will remember that.

When you said Honda eat rear disc brakes, do you mean the brake pads? Or the rotors?

How fast are your car going thru them?

I know there is a lot of factors like driving habits, or type of driving, but just to get an idea.
