Any thoughts on the sony 7.1 @ future shop online? Still considering the marantz 1601 or Harmon Kardon 1600 @ 2001 HIFI.... :o

My experience with entry level Harmon Kardon has been bad. I would avoid entry level Marantz too. However, Yamaha has never done me wrong.
The Denon is ok but personally I don't like the others. Just bought my parents the entry level Yamaha HTR from FS, it's good. I have one that's a couple of years old and it's even better. My yamaha stereo receiver is 18 years old now and still kicking doing daily music duty.

Pioneer receivers are very good. The one that's reduced by $500+ is a good deal.
