References for hardwood installer in GTA

Hey guys, looking for a contractor that you have tried and tested to install about 1700 sqft hardwood plus 16 stairs in the GTA area (preferably close to Oshawa)

Please only refer tried and tested contractors. I am ok to try contractors that provide or don’t provide materials.

Thank you!

So far I have taken quotes from Crane Flooring and Dragona Flooring and both have quoted $30k (with replacing baseboards etc etc) which I think so high.

I’ve used Atex Flooring two separate times (vinyl and carpet) and they were great for both. Would definitely recommend.

30k sounds like a lot until you consider materials cost. For hardwood alone if you select a good quality high end brand such as Vintage, Mirage or Perveco that is $9 sq ft:
Hardwood:1700 x 9= $15,300
Baseboard can be as cheap or expensive as you want, lets say 600 linear feet at $3 a foot:
Baseboard $1800
17k in materials alone before touching the stairs, you gave no details to hazard a guess on the 16 stairs. Capped or new treads....railing and ballusters?

Do go with a contractor someone is happy with. Next week we are going to see what went wrong on a 2 level stairs project that creaks and moans when walked on....that contractor dissapeared. 30k might sound "so high" until you pay a Kijiji handyman $2 sq ft to install $5 sq ft Bruce hardwood and he doesn't even take 4 hours to eliminate sub floor squeaks....you end up with a house ready to sell but not to live in for 20k.

Not sure the brand of the product. We used Floortrends out of Bowmanville to install some mail down engineered through most of our second floor. Installer was Horace. Very satisfied

Check out Markham Flooring - they deal with big Builders (ie Mattamy) and their pricing for hardwood was almost a $1.00 sq ft cheaper than others we compared to.

Try and use the company’s installers that you purchase from in case there is any issues they will warranty their work whereas someone hired just for installing is not as invested.

Hey,

Interested to see who you went with. We’re located in North York and we’re also looking for a referral for flooring installation etc.

Also interested to know how your experience was in general (how many days did it take? Any unforeseen costs? Working around furniture? WFH during the install? Etc.

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

You really do get what you pay for. Dont purchase a nice hardwood and get a crappy installer ruin it. Stairs are expensive to do (and properly) so that could be a bulk of the price. Ive had an installer listed above install my new floor and it came out like garbage, small and large pieces grouped altogether, i was really disappointed.

Wanted to chime in that we had a very positive experience with Markham Flooring and their inhouse installers. I believe they do their own work as Valiant Flooring - we would certainly hire them again if we were doing flooring.
