I always figured all the students with the laptops who fill every table at the coffee shop and stay there all day must be there because of no internet at home.

It is the social status thing. It is the same reason why people go to a bar to drink when they can buy the same drink from a liquor store for much cheaper.

More people than you realize... the working poor for example make up the largest portion of folks without internet access at home.
Internet at home is sweet when you can afford it... but tech is an expensive luxury vs the necessities of rent, heat, hydro, water, food & public transportation
Tv, Cellphones & Internet... fall way down the list when one is truly broke
