renewing driver's license online or in person?

I will be needed to be on a business trip soon in Aug heading to Calgary,AB but both my driver's license& Health card will expired in Aug.

The service Canada web encourages people to renew online, is it a temporary renewal or last for another good 5 years?

OR

Should I book an appointment in person?

Very confused by their website instructions

Thanks

You'll get temporary documents showing you recently renewed both cards. While you travel, you'll probably need to carry both your old cards and the temporary renewal documents. Your new card will arrive in your mailbox in a few weeks.

When given enough time, all threads on RFD can and will go off on a tangent.

Renew both online, keep the receipts as proof

If doing on-line, either
1. renew both at the same time
or
2. OHIP first and driver second

Do not try to renew driver online first, then OHIP afterwards as separate transactions. If you try this, you won't be able to renew OHIP without the your new physical driver's license (which you won't have yet)

ServiceOntario website

Renewing online is the same as renewing in-person

The renewed card will be mailed to you in approximately 4 to 6 weeks.

Just make sure you don't need a new picture taken. Then you'll have no choice but to go to a ServiceOntario centre.

Arhh... how should I know? My current license picture was taken 5 years ago during renewal..

Already renewed online and the process seemed to be through....

I recently renewed my ON DL online. It was delivered in less than 10 days. Validity is for 5 years.

No need to worry then if the process was completed. It would have told you online if you needed to visit the office in person,

I did not know this, Online Renewal of DL Card.
Good to know as my DLC expires in 2022.
Thanks Dhanushan.

I always assumed it is required you go in-person to renew DLC or Health Card to take an updated photo every 5 years.

I'm guessing things have changed

I think the new picture interval is 10 years. Or at least it was for me (2009 and 2019j.

How is it confusing?

Go onto Service Ontario site. Renew. Pay. Print PDF. Done.

Within 2 weeks ... renewal IDs in your mailbox.

I got mine in 5 business days.

I notice my driver license expires in 5 months.

If I renew now, will the expiry date be 5 years from now?

Should I wait until closer to the expiry date to renew, so I can prolong the date on the next renewal?

The only time you need to renew in person is if your photo is getting dated and the province decides when that is.

If given the choice I would always opt for online.....it's just so much easier than going to those Service Ontario offices and waiting in line forever.

You can renew up to 6 months in advance but will require a photo. It expires on your birthday so it is not set to the date that you actually renew. The expiry date is your birth date regardless of the up to the prior 6 month time frame.

The lines will be a lot shorter since we don't have to get new license stickers anymore.

I think it’s every 10 years.
