The rep of YorkU

Has YorkU gained a lot of respect in the last few years in terms of academics. They seem to be talked about more and more these days

Actually York has always been very well respected in the academic world...
Where most of the negative image came from is from the Hong Kong community.....Alot of the HK'ers didn't like York.....There was a story going way back to the 80's where 3 York computer science grads went back to HK to work in a large corporation, and they mistakenly wiped out the company's computer network...
Another reason why HK/Chinese don't like York is, they don't know where it was before.....They hear University of Toronto...and think that UofT is the official university of Toronto...IE. in HK, HONG KONG University is so much more respected than Chinese University...

York is not the only one that suffered from this.....15-20 years ago, not many people in HK would know about Queen's University....
Now, its one of the most popular...

York's rep right now in general is pretty good...
Look what its got going for them:

- one of the top Business schools in Canada
- the oldest and largest Law School in canada
- one of the largest telescope in Canada (great Astromny program)
- cutting edge Fine Arts program
- etc... etc....

Add, emerging Engineering School, add all new Faculty of Health

It seems York is really trying to diversify itself.

Yes, all schools have some silly bashing about another university.

If you can eat with a fork, you can go to york.

I can't remember others, i remember getting an email with all these things.

York has a very good grad and post grad program. I think it's their undergrad that gets an undeserved rep? Besides, York likes to throw lots of money at students so they cannot be as bad as my alma mater would have you believe (U of T). Personally, I think U of T is full of itself in the academic world. They think they're so good but their programs are becoming second rate for the money they charge and their facilities are becoming a joke. Convo Hall is an excellent example.

I always assumed York was a law/arts school, so when someone said engineering, I was hinking, "WTF? Ar ethey accredited already?"

As for the jokes about universities, I think this is it: http://flyer666.livejournal.com/63204.html

I believe York is not accredited in eng yet. They are working on it.

3rd largest, actually...unless you mean in campus size. Then, yes.

How does the accreditation work for engineering? How would one get their P.Eng, then? I wouldn't mind taking space engineering.
