Replacing bubbling plates - when do you get replacement plates?

So I know what to do if I have bubbling / peeled plates. According to : https://www.ontario.ca/page/replace-los ... #section-6

"You must bring both plates in for replacement, even if only one has peeling or bubbling"

Everything makes sense but do I get new plates right away? If I have to bring both my plates, do they keep them? how do I drive home? Did I miss something?

Thanks

Bring the two plates, along with the following items, to the nearest ServiceOntario centre:

  • identification (e.g. driver’s licence)
  • proof of valid insurance from an insurance provider licensed in Ontario
  • the original vehicle permit (plate and vehicle portions)

Everything makes sense but do I get new plates right away? If I have to bring both my plates, do they keep them? how do I drive home? Did I miss something?

Yes. You get them right away. Bring a screwdriver. Remove in parking lot. Obtain new plates, install in parking lot.

Thanks and much appreciated for the fast response. This seems like such a simple question that I couldn't find the answer anywhere else.

FYI You get a new number as well when you do this.

Side rant. I've always wondered why it is not a ticketable violation to have plates which cannot be read. I've seen plates so bad you can't see any blue on them.

It is ticketable offence to have plates that can't be read. It's just that its not enforced as much as it should be with COVID and the issue with the "B" series plates.

It is, but police don't enforce it.

It's not COVID related because this problem has been around for a long time. It should be logged by parking enforcement perhaps and then fines (for unreadable plate) if not fixed within X number of months after being logged.

Similarly I've read that colored plates are not legal but yet they're sold in stores.

What's the point of having rules when they are never enforced.

I mean it makes sense. I thought where could they store a machine that stamps plates right away? What a service!

So... with new plate numbers, other than having to remember a new plate. Is there anything that I need to update or be aware of?

Nothing else to update/be aware of that I can think of ....some ppl are attached to their old plates because they've had them forever so they don't want to give it up. Kind of like getting a 416 phone number.

But I understand there is a charge if the plates are older than 5 years.

"ServiceOntario will replace licence plates at no charge that are deemed to be defective if they are returned to a ServiceOntario Centre within 5 years of the purchase date. Otherwise, a $59 replacement fee would apply."

I'm attached because my plates are tied to my work parking. It's more the hassle when you change anything.

YMMV, my wife got hers replaced for free after 10 years.

City should give parking enforcement workers the ability to ticket parked cars with plate covers and unreadable plates.

I suspect that this is not an option; parking tickets are given by "By-law enforcement" (which they are allowed to do). Expired registration, plate covers, unreadable plates, you can also add damaged taillights, windshield, bald tires, etc are all Highway Traffic Act violations and by-law officers are not authorized to ticket for those. Also, there's no incentive; by-law officers are city employees ticketing for money that goes to the city. HTA violations do not go to the city.

Kinda makes for a slap in the face for people who follow the rules (i.e. renew stickers, make sure the plates are readable, no smoke covers). It's like the people who are doing this are sticking the finger at the good guys and the cops as they don't do anything.

Everything is a "mish-mash" of rules/policies/that's not my job/that's not my money/we don't have authority over this etc. No wonder nothing every gets done. There's no logic anywhere in any of this.

There's a reason why the best smartest ppl out there will never run for Gov't or even want to work for Gov't. Bureaucracy.

I forgot to mention it but I think it's actually a great idea to have the by-law officers do that.

But I just wanted to point out (right or wrong) that there are logistical / political reasons why I don't think it could happen (As silly as it sounds, imagine how the police union would re-act if suddenly the by-law officers were allowed to issue traffic tickets.

Is anyone still driving around with bubbling plates? You can hardly see any of my digits anymore.

I have yet to change mine because I don't want to line up at the crazy Service of Ontario offices and have my digits changed....it took me long enough to memorize my current mish mash of numbers/letters.
