Reuters: "Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system"

Interesting development. I wonder if it sticks.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Alphabet Inc’s Google has suspended business with Huawei that requires the transfer of hardware and software products except those covered by open source licenses, a source close to the matter told Reuters on Sunday, in a blow to the Chinese technology company that the U.S. government has sought to blacklist around the world.

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system, and the next version of its smartphones outside of China will also lose access to popular applications and services including the Google Play Store and Gmail app.

Details of the specific services were still being discussed internally at Google, according to the source. Huawei attorneys are also studying the impact of the U.S. Commerce Department’s actions, a Huawei spokesman said on Friday. Huawei was not immediately reachable for further comment.

Representatives of the U.S. Commerce Department did not immediately have comment.

Dang, Huawei be screwed. Having the most recent Android version is one of the big reasons to get a new phone. When my current phone no longer gets the latest Android OS and updates, I will get another phone.

Don't u worry.
Phone business is like 5% of huawei. They r fine without making phones.
And those 2 Canadians break laws in China and of course r punished as if they were Chinese. No exeptions. They should have known it before challenging the law.
Right now it is like what Japan was trying to do to Korea back then. What happened?! Now Korean electronics are amount the best in the world.

So the claim is Huawei is working on behalf of the Chinese government.
And then you have Google tangibly working on behalf of the US government.

It's typically an embarrassment under any other president, but it's apparently a feature under Trump.

Sounds like Huawei will have to spin up an app which automatically "side-loads" the Google Play store from known sources.

This is a big "nothing-burger".

If anything, this will be great for consumers as Huawei will likely have to embrace and support 3rd party firmwares fully. Like LineageOS. Making Huawei's products even more attractive and transparent than their competitors.

I don't blame him. He has his angle. Huawei was just picked by usa gov. This is about the conflict btw 2 different political operating system. There r pros and cons to both and we don't know where we will end up. But for sure to limit or suppress the growth of Chinese gov , best way is to limit it is technology development. Chinese doesn't want to world cheap goods manufacturer anymore. This conflict will come sooner or later. But look at Korea , Japan at one point was doing the same to Korea yet it becomesonr of the top technology counties.

I hope you're talking about the drug dealers and not the ex diplomat and North Korean tour guide/facilitator (Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor) who've been held without charge in solitary confinement since the Meng arrest. They've now formally been charged, much to the relief of their families since they'll now be integrated with the regular criminal population. Meanwhile, Meng is under house arrest in her mansion in Vancouver.

This will make Huawei and the Chinese more determined to keep progressing. Google will regret this decision.

Yup. All the hardware makers are either scrambling to have OS alternatives or already have one, now that the precedence is set. There needs to be an alternative to Android/IOS, Facebook, Google, Apple, etc. So far the only country who can pull this off is China. USA is desperately trying to maintain their tech dominance.
