I don't know if you were wrong or not. The answer will be revealed during the shave. That said, I don't like the pivoting head. It seems that you need to press the head against the skin.

Yeah, it's odd how far back the blades are set. One of the reasons I'd rather try it over a $200CAD DE razor, though, is because it's highly likely that a $6 DE razor out of China will eventually perfectly replicate the Feather head's functionality:
http://www.dx.com/p/rimei-men-s-manual- ... ver-201352 <-$6 DE razor w/ free shipping
http://www.dx.com/p/cloud-plastic-stain ... ack-149689 <-$2.50 plastic DE razor w/ free shipping

Zaffiro, though, offers the possibility of a blood & irritation-free shave, which I'd love (as I'm not a fan of alum products). I'll let you know in 13 months, once it gets here.

The Rimei razor looks cool. I might get one since the price is very good.

You can order this (AS-D2) through amazon.com for $143.70 shipped including a $6.50 estimated duty charge. Too rich for my blood (the Zaffiro) for an unproven product, plus I don't like the cartridge form factor. If I want to spend that kind of money, I'll buy a Mongoose single edge.

Coincidentally, I ordered a couple of the RiMei razors from DX last week after reading some great reviews on them. I'll let you know my thoughts once I receive them.

I don't know anything about those razors, but it might be worth picking up the cheapest one just for the case if it fits a better razor.

That first one looks to be a Weishi clone. The box is very similar to a Weishi, but the brush is different to the one I got with mine and it looks to be missing the notches at the end of the center blade alignment bar. The case is very similar, but unbranded.

The second one is sold at aliexpress for a similar price: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Men- ... 76325.html

The third may be this one: http://www.dx.com/p/honglong-rm2788-zin ... 61#reviews

I just received the shaving stand I had ordered in October and it's really nice. It fits my Merkur 23c well (head up) and the Omega 98 & Semogue 1305 (& Semogue ItalianBarber.Com Limited Edition 2012) brushes perfectly...fit right in the middle of the handles, as God intended. Auction is in CAD...$12.59 grand total (although I paid $12.80, before a price reduction):

That stand seems to be everywhere on eBay. I have the same one, and I agree that it's very good.

Incidentally, I received my shipment of 100 Voskhod blades from an eBay seller called Gordelux04 yesterday. The shipment arrived in 22 days from Russia, so that's not bad, since the blades probably sat in Canada Post's warehouse for a good chunk of that time. It's my second order from them and both times the package arrived quickly, so I'd recommend them if you want some cheap Russian blades. These are the same blades that Putin has for breakfast. ;)

I used the same seller for my Voskhod blades (and the "free gift" was a single Rapira blade). I find that Voskhod blades tug a LOT more than my Personna do. I also find that I'm forcing myself to change blades just to try new stuff, otherwise I could go forever...I'd probably still be on my tuggy Merkur blade, if I wasn't so curious about the Personna (having watched 'em on YouTube)...

Yeah, I laughed at the Rapira blade, but technically it was free... I have yet to purchase any Personnas, but I hear they're really good. My experience with the Voskhod is much better than yours, I find them sharp and smooth, similar to the Gillette Silver Blues. I had already tried Voskhods from a Russian blade sampler pack and decided to go for 100 since I thought they were great and they were cheap as chips.

So I received my RiMei razors from DX.com yesterday and shaved this morning with one. The quality is actually not bad. I'm not sure what the base materials are, but the plating seems good and the razor is reasonably heavy. It's a 3-piece razor in the style of a Gillette Tech. The one I opened has a straight safety bar; I mention this only because it seems that many people have theirs arrive with a slightly bent safety bar. I used it with a Gillette Silver Blue blade on its fifth use and it gave me a nice smooth shave in 2 passes with a few minor touch-ups required. I'd call it a medium aggressive razor. So, in short, if you only want to spend the bare minimum on shaving, I think you can't go wrong with this inexpensive razor.

Voskhod blades are supposed to be like Personna Blue blades, which is why I ordered them, but the one I tried was HORRIBLE. I kept giving it a chance (I even flipped it over, in case it was a bad blade install), but it must have been a dud, as it would leave wide beard lines behind (like those crazies that try to weave a checkered pattern into their lawns) and not remove them on subsequent passes. Chin area was a disaster...wouldn't even pretend to cut. As soon as I switched back to an old Personna Blue, shaving became easy and pleasurable, again. I have a Dorco DE razor w/ Dorco blades coming, so I'll report on those, soon. I also have a pack of Astras that I need to try out.
Thanks for the RiMei update.

I could be totally off-base, but I think I found an alternative to expensive dopp kits / toiletry bags. Bargain Barrels reported this camcorder bag on temporary flash-like sale for $11.70, so try to follow his link to give him credit:
http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B003JFS2EY
Looks like a quality bag that can double as a dopp kit.
EDIT: THE BAG IS NOW $10.00.

So, did anybody get any new shaving gear for Christmas?

I got my brother a Dorco Prime set and the awesome customer service people sent me a bonus set when I told them about inner rips inside the box making it looked use. Unfortunately, their razor + blade combo isn't good. In addition to having a really bad shave, I was left with deep cuts (mustache & upper chin took a while to heal). I tried a Personna blade with better results and a Dorco blade in my Merkur 23c, which was better still, but nothing came close to the unbelievable smoothness of 23c + Personna. I need to accept that my initial research brought me to the best combo and to stop looking elsewhere.
