RIP Super Channel?

The Super Channel licence is up for renewal.
Currently, the CRTC is NOT happy with Allarco entertainment. (owner of Super Channel)

Here are some violations that could lead to a termination of their licence:
(I'm guessing the CRTC will play nice and grant a short term temporary licence to give them fair warning and a chance to prove that they can stay on CRTC's good side)
condition 3, relating to the distribution of Canadian programs;
condition 5, relating to the eligibility and late payment of certain Canadian programming expenditures;
condition 6, relating to the eligibility of certain expenditures devoted to regional outreach programs;
condition 7, relating to the eligibility and late payment of certain expenditures devoted to script and concept development; and
condition 8, relating to the eligibility and late payment of certain expenditures devoted to regional outreach programs and script and concept development.

I haven't watched Superchannel since the 80's, but I have a lot of fond memories of the free preview weekends. In the world of on demand/streaming content I can see how it would struggle. In the 80's when you had to wait for stuff to show on TV, and the only way to see commercial free unedited stuff was a premium channel... free preview weekends were great :)

Wow, they agreed to all those payments in order to get the Super Channel license? Hard to believe they thought they would be that profitable with SC. I will miss the free previews also.

When people think SC they instantly think movies.
SC also has the rights to "alternative" sports like the LFL ( https://lflus.com/ ) but I honestly do not know if that makes any money for them or not...

It's still alive?

Man, the nostalgia seeing that and First Choice...was there a 3rd pay channel? Can't remember.
The richest 1% of this country owns half our country’s wealth, 5 trillion dollars, one-third of that comes from hard work, two-thirds comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons, and what I do.. <find the rest>

The third channel was "C" Channel, mostly devoted to the arts, one that I did enjoy.

Ah, yes, the very short lived "C" channel. "Pay television with a difference..."

Just came across this in an article about MuchMusic:

May 4, 1983 was when the CRTC opened the door for MuchMusic, with a call for applications for specialty licences. This would become the second wave of pay television in Canada, three months after the initial group of stations went live: First Choice, Superchannel, C Channel and Quebec’s TVEC. (ChumCity’s original application, for a movie channel called Premiere, was turned down by the CRTC.)

By the end of 1983, two of those new ones were gone. First Choice and Superchannel were broke, but survived thanks to a CRTC bailout scheme. The services were allowed to merge: First Choice took the eastern half of Canada, and Superchannel took the west.

I wonder if Allarco will simply sell the channels and wash their hands of this business?
