Rodent bait station - preventive measure

A friend of mine said that he places rodent bait station in his garden as a preventive measure against mices or rats

What's the pros and cons of doing that?

FYI, no visible trace of mices or rats in my place.

Plus, a bait station is designed to attract rodents (hence the word 'bait') so it might attract rodents just to see what's there.
