Thanks for everyone’s input. For the last few years, I’ve been running a similar but capped 4G/LTE service by tethering an old smart phone to an Asus router with usb-tethering capability to enable internet up at the lake. I typically use 150-200 GB/month during the season and 10GB off season just to run the security camera system. Of course, this got expensive (but still cheaper than Starlink). For me this is an excellent solution, but my only hesitation is working with Rogers again after dropping them 10 years ago because I couldn’t deal with their frustrating customer service. I may try them again because I do need something like this.

I really wanted Rogers to work. Up to 100 down for $50 and having the option to take it camping or anywhere else in Canada. I was sceptical because of weak cellular signal at my home. It does work but, no 5G signal, and weak 4G. I get a signal but it caps out at about 20Mbps down and 2-3Mbps up. It does not seem to lose connection. For comparison, I took it to both of my daughters homes, just a few kms up the road. One got 5G with speeds up to 95Mbps and the other got 4G with speeds up to 85Mbps. Both got very good pings, under 35. One of them is switching to this, the other likely. So it really does depend on cell signal. Also, at this time of year there are fewer people and no leaves on the trees. So I think a July test would be better. I do think Bell and Rogers have been adding capacity to the towers, different frequencies, etc

If you are rural and have decent signal, I would recommend. Last year I remember seeing YouTube reviews on the T-Mobile service that was basically the same and feeling jealous that it was not available in Canada. Now it's available and cheaper. You can place this on hold for $5/month, I don't know how many months/year you need to pay full price though. We are on that Ontario map rollout for wired service, but I am not holding my breath. This is likely going back for me, but it is great ammunition for me to tell Bell to keep my promotional pricing for another 12 months. I am going to get more details on the $5 hibernation price. For $5, that is a great price for backup and portability.
I’ve found it sometimes I’ve had to let it “settle” for like an hour before it locked on n78, especially on areas with low signal. Once it locked on And I didn’t move it, i got solid speeds even with -98dBm to -113dBm

FYI - Rogers online chat says you pause for a max of 6months per year, and a minimum 2 months per pause.

I get 100Mbps in the middle of the forest, so I cancelled my rogers and bell "Wireless home internet". However my 5G signal is just barely enough, the latency fluctuates more than I'd like.

The solution (which might also work for you) would be to hack this device to connect an external antenna to it. I've researched a bit online and couldn't find someone that has done it yet with this specific model, but I'm sure soon someone will figure it out.

Seems power-intensive compared to cable/fibre.

Also goes to show you that telecos have so much unused air space in the network that they can offer this, meanwhile keeping mobile data plan prices extremely expensive compared to literally anywhere else.

This modem is similar to the T-Mobile, there is possibility to add external antenna's:

My sentiments exactly. I really wanted this to work as I currently have 25/5 with a local company wireless, can't get the bell 50/10. However I must be too far from the tower as even upstairs in the front bedroom on the window sill I only 2/3 bars and no 5G so I was getting 15-20 down and 1-2 up.

I saw that but that's a different much older model. I don't think that method works for the model rogers is using.

It will, there is only slight design variant, Its still the Nokia FastMile series, 3 or 3.1 vs 3.2 (rogers). Still has the same internal antenna connectors.

Sadly, they didn't make external antenna ports from the get go.

You buy connectors and make your own external antenna if you okay with drilling the plastic case and disconnect the Internal antennas. But lots of times these things are calculated from factory to work with the building amplifier. So even if you use external antennas things may get worst then better. Perhaps locate device close to a window or closer insight with cell towers.

Rogers also sells/devices exist that are designed to be installed outdoors.

Maybe I talk B's.. I do see it's possible to get kit and install antenna outdoors

But kit is very pricy. Really worth it?

The SIM is locked to Nokia IMEI subset, so you can't just buy another modem from what I know and use it.

I came up with a post of someone that tried and it didn't work, making me think it might not be the same as the older versions, see here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Rogers/comment ... are_button

Does support enough bands.

need n66, n71, n78 (especially n78 for reliable 5G speeds and lower ping)

MoreDealsPlease wrote: Another thing. It's interesting that Nokia themselves have outdoor modems/antennas from the same FastMile series, too bad those are not available: https://www.nokia.com/networks/fixed-ne ... er-5g16-a/
Interesting, I have another person trying it out, maybe will have some results soon.

Another thing you can do is install the Nokia somewhere high up, in a waterproof glass enclosure that isn't air tight lol, the unit will work fine as long as it's not exposed directly to elements.

I see that working out.

I have mine sitting in a window and I get solid signal (~ -99dBm), with no change due to weather and my speeds remain consistent.

If someone can figure out a way to unlock the sim and use it in a different unit, then there definitely are options. So far since I got it when the $40/500GB plan was around (I got it updated to this new plan), my sim is locked to Nokia.

Got confirmation that external antenna work on the Nokia FastMile Gateway 3.2 Rogers unit. Someone I know that has one, went from getting 10-15Mbps to max speed on 4G/LTE because n78 isn't yet available on their rural tower.

Red sleeve connectors = 5G
White sleeve connectors = 4G/LTE antenna's so depending on what you are attempting to maximize, you focus on those.
