Pockets?? I think the OP meant red envelopes which are used in a Chinese custom to ward off evil spirits.
Small gifts or money are given in red envelopes for the lunar New Year, weddings et cetera to keep evil at bay & symbolize good luck.

I went to Ottawa local Rogers and they lady has no idea what's this. Maybe GTA only.

OP is in GVA, so at a guess, Vancouver & Toronto only
(i.e. where the largest Chinese communities are).
