[Rona] Early Bird promo - 15% back in RONA gift card. Same day as SAVE THE TAX

Clicking on the SAVE THE TAX event details took me to the EARLY BIRD page.

Seems like it will be 15% off early morning and then 13% (save the tax) for the rest of the day.

I usually hate gift cards promo because you still need to pay sales tax on a full purchase price, and then use the gift card on a purchase on which you'll pay sales taxes as well.

Now, this double whammy is very lovely.

If it's 15% back in gift cards and no tax, can we do this? Just thinking out loud here.

Example:
Purchase 1 - Buy item for $100. Get $15 GC(1) back.

Purchase 2 - Buy another item for $100. Apply GC(1) to purchase, making it $85 purchase. Get $85 x 15% = $12.75 in GC(2) back.

Return Purchase 1 back to Rona, and return the GC(2) in place of the GC(1), and give Rona back $2.25 back to make up the difference in GC value.

This effectively makes my purchase 2 to be $85 + $2.25 = $87.25, and I have no leftover GC that I have to hold onto.

Is this allowed? That's about 22% savings from what I would have to pay without GC rebate and tax free (original price would be $113).

Is this promotion available in Alberta? Asked Rona employees for it today. None of them are aware of it.
