Round Trip Toronto/Vancouver with Aeroplan Miles

I'm planning a 1 week trip in July to visit my sister and would like to minimize my out of pocket expenses. Standard op would be to book on Aeroplan, but their website shows flights available and the required Aeroplan miles redeemed, but not the extra charges (taxes, fees, surcharges) which may amount to $80 - $100 Cdn each leg. The flight would be a non stop Air Canada flight.

Visiting the United Airlines website, I can see that with the supersaver award, I could fly non stop from Toronto to Vancouver for 12,500 miles (or 25,000 miles round trip) and they show $22.60 for fees and taxes ($45.20 round trip). And the flight is the same Air Canada flight - AC33.

Questions:
  1. Is the supersaver milage on the UA website the same milage as the Aeroplan for a long haul North American flight 25,000 round trip)?
  2. Has anyone done this type of booking without any problems? IE: book on UA website to fly via their partner, Air Canada, from Toronto to Vancouver, using Aeroplan miles.
  3. Not withstanding that UA website says $22.60 for fees and taxes, are there any additional costs that might surprise me at the departure gate?
Thanks for looking and any advise offered.

I have never flown United (except as part of a Rewards ticket booked through Aeroplan - I was routed back through Washington) so cannot comment on that part of your question.

But I do not understand why you can't see the fees and taxes on the available AC flights when on the Aeroplan website. I am always able to. The fees and taxes are shown before you proceed with the seat purchase. Unless the Aeroplan site is not working - again.

You cannot book on UA website

You can only book via Aeroplan.com or call center

If you see Saver availability on UA.com, then Aeroplan.com should see it too, for 25K r/t

You'll see the final tax/fees at the "checkout" page

You're right! After I selected the flights, the Aeroplan website did come up with the fees and taxes ($160.28). So the savings would be about $100, if I was able to book the same flights using Aeroplan miles via the United.com website.

Yes, for exactly the same flights, if you booking thru UA with UA points, they don't add the scamcharges. But if you book thru aeropeso, they add on the scamcharges.

They used to call it fuel surcharge, but now changed it to "carrier surcharge". Most people call them scamcharges.

what you want to do is impossible, it's like trying to use Canadian Tire money on the Petro Points program....

if you can open a UA Miles Plus account and convert all your points 1:1 and then redeem on UA.com, great

otherwise, you're stuck paying whatever surcharge Aeroplan will charge on the AC flight.
