[Royal Bank] RBC Westjet Renewal Fee Waived - YMMV

Just sharing my recent experience regarding my RBC westjet credit card that was up for renewal this month.
I phoned in to cancel my CC as it was not going to be used anytime soon due to covid.
The representative offered to waive the annual fee, without being prompted, instead of cancelling and re-applying at a later date.
Worth a try, searched forum and did not see this posted, be gentle.

How do I cancel a credit card?

YMMV -- I called in to cancel my card (and my wife) -- didn't even offer. They said they can't do it -- BS -- as I had it done last year.

I also cancelled it yesterday, and RBC was nice enough to refund the entire annual fee although I was already 3 months into the renewal. I didn't see myself using it for at least a year, so no point in keeping it.

When I called in, all I said was that I was cancelling because of covid and that I would reapply at a later date.
Rep instantly offered to waive fee instead of going through the approval process all over again later.
Guess I got lucky, sorry.

a travel credit card probably isn't worth the plastic it is printed on these days...
insurance is useless. airlines not returning credit.
i cancelled. can re-apply when flights return to some semblance of normal.

Had the exact same card. Called in to cancel 2 days ago and was only offered to switch to a non-fee. No offer to waive (and I asked for it)

Agreed, but when offered a waived fee for the year, it saves me reapplying later.
Can cancel it next year at this time if covid is still affecting travel.
Also, keeps my current companion voucher intact.

Just called again, they stated since I've had mine waived the last 3 years they can no longer offer a credit.

Damn them.

Doesn’t this kinda make sense?

You don’t deserve a fee waive for special circumstances if you’ve skirted through a fee everyone else has paid for the last 3 years.

The biggest issue is the member reward fights have been devalued to the point they basically don't exist anymore. The companion fare is almost just as useless, doesn't save much overall. The card is basically a churn card now unless they keep the minimum spend where it is.

I was on hold for 20min+ waiting to speak to a rep as well.
But for $119, it was worth it.

I use this card for the free luggage and companion coupon mostly.
Not used as my daily CC.
